Mercury
What you are here to communicate
One of the 13 bodies that program your Human Design chart — on the Personality and the Design side.
In Human Design, Mercury programs communication: the gate it activates describes what you need to say and how your voice is heard in the world.
There is something you need to say. You say it in meetings, in messages, in arguments you did not mean to start. In Human Design that "something" has a gate: your Mercury.
Fact sheet
What does this planet program in Human Design?
Mercury programs communication and information processing. Its 88-day cycle is the same interval that defines the two columns of your chart, which is why it is seen as the planet that "translates" between your body and your mind. The gate it activates describes the message you are here to transmit and the way you process what you receive: what you hear, what you keep and what you need to give back to the world in words. On the Personality side it is your conscious voice; on the Design side, your bodily voice.
What does it bring on the Personality side?
The Personality Mercury describes what you find impossible not to say. It is the subject you have opinions on, the kind of conversation you seek and the way you order your ideas when speaking. When it is not aligned with your strategy, it becomes talking too much, explaining too much or arguing for sport.
And on the Design side?
The Design Mercury describes what you communicate without words: the tone you use without meaning to, the gestures, the rhythm at which your body listens and responds. Many people discover here why they "say one thing and people understand another": the Design message gets through even when the Personality message says the opposite.
What does it look like day to day?
A Mercury in Gate 62 communicates with details and facts and despairs at vagueness; in Gate 12 it needs the right moment to speak and falls silent when it cannot find it; in Gate 56 it communicates through stories and learns through anecdote. Your Mercury gate explains why the way you write a message is so different from your partner’s or your business partner’s. Look it up in the Library.
How do you train it?
Before communicating, consult your authority. Mercury gains clarity when the message leaves at the right moment for your type; the gate tells you what to say, the strategy tells you when.
Do you recognise yourself?
Tick the ones that ring true. Three or more and this energy is probably yours.
