El dictamen. La duración. Éxito. Sin culpa. Es propicia la perseverancia. Conviene tener adónde ir.

La imagen. El trueno y el viento: la imagen de la duración. Así el noble se mantiene firme y no cambia de rumbo.

Arriba el trueno, abajo el viento. Son los dos fenómenos más veloces y menos estables del repertorio del I Ching, y sin embargo el hexagrama que forman se llama la duración. La paradoja está buscada: lo que dura no es lo que se queda quieto, es lo que se renueva sin cambiar de naturaleza. La tormenta pasa, pero siempre hay tormenta.

El 32 es la pareja del 31 y forma con él una unidad. Si el anterior era el cortejo, el encuentro de la joven pareja, este es el matrimonio ya establecido: el vínculo que dejó de ser novedad y se convirtió en institución. Por eso el trigrama masculino está arriba y el femenino abajo, en la disposición que la sociedad antigua consideraba el orden estable de una casa.

La Imagen prescribe firmeza en el rumbo, no en la forma, y el Dictamen lo confirma con una frase que parece contradecirlo: conviene tener adónde ir. Durar no es detenerse. Un río dura porque corre; si se para, se pudre. La constancia del 32 es un movimiento repetido con dirección constante, y el hexagrama se ocupa sobre todo de distinguirla de sus dos falsificaciones, la rigidez y la inquietud.

The Judgment. Duration. Success. No blame. Steadfastness brings reward. It furthers to have somewhere to go.

The Image. Thunder and wind: the image of Duration. Thus the noble one stands firm and does not change direction.

Thunder above, wind below. They are the two fastest and least stable phenomena in the I Ching repertoire, and yet the hexagram they form is called Duration. The paradox is deliberate: what lasts is not what stays still, it is what renews itself without changing its nature. The storm passes, but there is always a storm.

32 is the partner of 31 and forms a unit with it. If the previous one was courtship, the meeting of the young couple, this one is the established marriage: the bond that stopped being novelty and became institution. That is why the masculine trigram sits above and the feminine below, in the arrangement ancient society considered the stable order of a household.

The Image prescribes firmness in direction, not in form, and the Judgment confirms it with a line that seems to contradict it: it furthers to have somewhere to go. To last is not to stop. A river lasts because it runs; if it stops, it rots. The constancy of 32 is a repeated movement with a constant direction, and the hexagram is mostly concerned with telling it apart from its two counterfeits, rigidity and restlessness.

Sacaste el 32 y la pregunta seguramente tenía que ver con algo que ya lleva tiempo: una pareja de años, un trabajo estable, una sociedad, una rutina, una casa. El hexagrama no te trae novedades, y esa es exactamente su respuesta. Lo que estás mirando no necesita reinventarse, necesita durar bien.

Durar no es quedarse quieto: es repetir el movimiento sin cambiar de rumbo, como el trueno y el viento, que vuelven siempre y nunca son idénticos. La forma se renueva todos los días; la dirección no se toca.

En lo concreto: la pareja que sigue eligiendo lo mismo y sin embargo cambia de casa, de trabajo y de costumbres. El oficio que practicás hace quince años y que hoy hacés distinto que al principio. El entrenamiento, el idioma, el instrumento, la amistad de toda la vida que atravesó cuatro etapas. En todos los casos lo que se sostuvo fue el rumbo, no el formato, y ese es el criterio para decidir qué conservar cuando algo hay que cambiar.

El error típico son las dos falsificaciones de la constancia. Una es la rigidez: confundir durar con no mover nada, repetir el mismo aniversario, la misma conversación y el mismo plan hasta que la relación se vuelve un museo. La línea 4 lo dice sin piedad: no hay caza en el campo, porque hace años que cazás donde ya no queda nada. La otra es la inquietud, la línea 6: cambiar todo el tiempo de rumbo y llamarlo búsqueda, empezar de cero cada dos años y no llegar nunca a la parte buena, que siempre está más adelante. El tercer camino del 32 es el más simple de enunciar y el que casi nadie practica: mantené la dirección y renová la forma. Preguntate qué es lo que no se negocia y después cambiá todo lo demás con tranquilidad.

En lo práctico, el hexagrama 32 suele aparecer cuando:

• Estás en algo estable hace años y no sabés si sostenerlo o cambiarlo.
• Una rutina que te servía se volvió repetición vacía.
• Empezaste algo y querés que dure, pero te apurás por consolidarlo.
• Cambiás de rumbo seguido y nunca llegás a la parte que rinde.

You drew 32 and your question almost certainly involved something that has been going a while: a marriage of years, a stable job, a partnership, a routine, a home. The hexagram brings no news, and that is exactly its answer. What you are looking at does not need reinventing, it needs to last well.

Lasting is not standing still: it is repeating the movement without changing direction, like thunder and wind, which always return and are never identical. The form renews itself every day; the direction is not touched.

Concretely: the couple who keep choosing the same thing and yet change house, job and habits. The craft you have practised for fifteen years and do differently today than at the start. The training, the language, the instrument, the lifelong friendship that has crossed four eras. In every case what held was the direction, not the format, and that is the criterion for deciding what to keep when something has to change.

The typical mistake is one of the two counterfeits of constancy. The first is rigidity: mistaking lasting for moving nothing, repeating the same anniversary, the same conversation and the same plan until the relationship becomes a museum. Line 4 says it without mercy: there is no game in the field, because you have been hunting for years where nothing is left. The second is restlessness, line 6: changing direction constantly and calling it searching, starting from zero every two years and never reaching the good part, which is always further along. The third way of 32 is the simplest to state and the one almost nobody practises: hold the direction and renew the form. Ask yourself what is not up for negotiation, and then change everything else calmly.

In practice, hexagram 32 tends to come up when:

• You have been in something stable for years and cannot tell whether to hold it or change it.
• A routine that used to serve you has become empty repetition.
• You started something and want it to last, but you are rushing to consolidate it.
• You change direction often and never reach the part that pays off.

   Recién empezó algo y ya querés garantías de que va a seguir. Es pedirle a los tres meses de relación las promesas de los diez años, o querer que el proyecto de la semana pasada tenga estructura de empresa. La línea avisa que forzar la permanencia tan temprano rompe lo que quería asegurar, porque todavía no hay raíz suficiente. La duración se construye hacia atrás: primero se hace, después se sostiene, y recién después se nombra.

   Something has only just started and you already want guarantees that it will continue. It is asking a three-month relationship for ten-year promises, or wanting last week and its project to have the structure of a company. The line warns that forcing permanence this early breaks the thing it wanted to secure, because there is not enough root yet. Duration is built backwards: first you do it, then you sustain it, and only after that do you name it.

2. LíneaLine 2 — El arrepentimiento se vaRemorse disappears

   Dos palabras y nada más: el I Ching es así de económico cuando la situación está bien. Estás en el lugar correcto, con la fuerza justa para lo que hacés, y lo único que hacía ruido era tu duda. La línea la disuelve. En la práctica quiere decir seguí como venías y dejá de revisar la decisión cada semana. Lo que sostiene esta posición no es el esfuerzo extra, es la proporción: ni te estás excediendo ni te estás quedando corto.

   Two words and nothing else: the I Ching is that economical when the situation is sound. You are in the right place, with exactly the force the task requires, and the only thing making noise was your doubt. The line dissolves it. In practice it means carry on as you were and stop reopening the decision every week. What holds this position is not extra effort, it is proportion: you are neither overreaching nor falling short.

3. LíneaLine 3 — El carácter sin duraciónCharacter without duration

   El que no le da duración a su carácter encuentra deshonra. Humillación persistente.Whoever gives no duration to their character meets disgrace. Persistent humiliation.

   Es la línea del que cambia de opinión según con quién habla, del que promete distinto a cada persona, del que se entusiasma el lunes y desaparece el jueves. El texto no habla de fracaso sino de deshonra, que es peor: nadie sabe con qué versión tuya está tratando y dejan de contar con vos. Si te salió esta línea, la reparación empieza chiquita, cumpliendo esta semana tres cosas que dijiste, aunque sean menores.

   This is the line of someone who changes their mind depending on whom they are talking to, who promises something different to each person, who is enthusiastic on Monday and gone by Thursday. The text speaks not of failure but of disgrace, which is worse: nobody knows which version of you they are dealing with, and they stop counting on you. If this line came up, the repair starts small, by delivering three things you said this week, even minor ones.

4. LíneaLine 4 — No hay caza en el campoNo game in the field

   Salís todos los días a cazar al mismo lugar y hace rato que no hay animales. La línea describe la constancia mal ubicada: la persona sigue haciendo lo correcto en un sitio donde eso ya no da resultado. Es el negocio en el barrio que cambió, el método de estudio que servía hace diez años, la manera de hablar que a esa persona ya no le llega. No hay reproche a tu esfuerzo. El problema es el campo, y la duración se salva mudando la caza.

   You go out every day to hunt in the same place and there have been no animals for a long time. The line describes constancy in the wrong location: the person keeps doing the right thing somewhere it no longer produces anything. It is the shop in a neighbourhood that changed, the study method that worked ten years ago, the way of talking that no longer reaches that person. There is no reproach to your effort. The field is the problem, and duration is saved by moving the hunt.

   La línea distingue dos lugares. Si tu tarea es sostener y acompañar, mantener siempre la misma conducta es una virtud y trae fortuna. Si tu tarea es decidir por otros, la misma inflexibilidad se vuelve un problema, porque el que conduce tiene que ajustar el rumbo cuando el terreno cambia. La constancia no es igual para todos: fijate qué lugar ocupás antes de decidir si esta semana toca sostener o toca corregir.

   The line distinguishes two positions. If your task is to sustain and accompany, keeping the same conduct throughout is a virtue and brings good fortune. If your task is to decide for others, that same inflexibility becomes a problem, because whoever leads has to adjust course when the terrain changes. Constancy is not the same for everyone: work out which position you occupy before deciding whether this week calls for holding or for correcting.

6. LíneaLine 6 (arriba de todothe top line) — La inquietud permanentePermanent restlessness

   La inquietud como estado permanente trae desgracia.Restlessness as a permanent condition brings misfortune.

   La última línea es la más actual del hexagrama: alguien que vive cambiando de plan, de ciudad, de proyecto y de vínculo, y que llama a eso movimiento. La agitación constante es lo contrario de la duración y consume la energía que hacía falta para llegar a algún lado. Si te salió esta línea, el ejercicio es elegir una sola cosa y sostenerla seis meses sin retocarla. No hace falta que sea la correcta; hace falta que sea una.

   The last line is the most contemporary in the hexagram: someone who lives changing plans, cities, projects and partners, and calls that movement. Constant agitation is the opposite of duration and burns exactly the energy needed to get anywhere. If this line came up, the exercise is to choose one single thing and hold it for six months without tinkering. It does not have to be the right one; it has to be one.
