El dictamen. El influjo. Éxito. Es propicia la perseverancia. Tomar una joven por esposa trae fortuna.

La imagen. El lago sobre la montaña: la imagen del influjo. Así el noble deja que la gente se le acerque por su disposición a recibirla.

El 31 abre la segunda mitad del libro, la que trata del mundo humano, y lo hace con la atracción. Abajo está la montaña, arriba el lago: una laguna asentada en la hondonada de una cumbre. Para que exista esa laguna la montaña tuvo que ahuecarse; si la cima fuera maciza, el agua se escurriría por las laderas.

Esa es toda la enseñanza del hexagrama, y es más sutil de lo que parece. El influjo no funciona por empuje sino por hueco. Lo firme se vacía un poco y lo blando se apoya; nadie forzó nada y sin embargo los dos quedaron unidos. La tradición ubica acá el cortejo, la juventud y el comienzo del matrimonio, por eso el Dictamen menciona a la joven esposa: un vínculo que empieza por atracción sincera y no por conveniencia.

La Imagen extrae la consecuencia social. El noble no sale a convencer a nadie; se vuelve alguien a quien se puede acercar, y la gente llega sola. En el I Ching esta es la definición de la influencia legítima, y también su límite: la que se consigue empujando no es influjo, es presión, y se deshace apenas aflojás.

The Judgment. Influence. Success. Steadfastness brings reward. Taking a young woman in marriage brings good fortune.

The Image. A lake on the mountain: the image of influence. Thus the noble one lets people approach through a readiness to receive them.

31 opens the second half of the book, the half about the human world, and it opens it with attraction. Below sits the mountain, above the lake: a pool settled in the hollow of a summit. For that pool to exist the mountain had to hollow out; if the peak were solid, the water would run off down the slopes.

That is the whole teaching of the hexagram, and it is subtler than it looks. Influence works by hollow, not by push. The firm thing empties a little and the soft thing rests in it; nobody forced anything and yet the two are joined. Tradition places courtship, youth and the beginning of marriage here, which is why the Judgment mentions the young wife: a bond that starts in sincere attraction rather than in convenience.

The Image draws the social consequence. The noble one does not go out to convince anybody; they become someone who can be approached, and people arrive on their own. In the I Ching this is the definition of legitimate influence, and also its limit: what you get by pushing is not influence, it is pressure, and it comes undone the moment you ease off.

Sacaste el 31 y hay alguien o algo que te atrae, o alguien a quien querés llegar. Puede ser una persona, un puesto, un público, un grupo. El hexagrama dice que sí, que la atracción es real y que puede prosperar, y después te corrige el método.

No se atrae empujando: se atrae haciendo lugar. La montaña sostiene el lago porque se ahuecó, y esa es la única maniobra que el hexagrama aprueba. Todo lo demás, por bien intencionado que sea, es presión disfrazada.

En lo concreto: la persona que quiere gustar y habla sin parar de sí misma, cuando lo que enamora es escuchar. El vendedor que insiste, cuando lo que cierra es entender el problema del otro. El candidato que manda cien mensajes en vez de hacer un trabajo que se note. También aparece en la vida afectiva más íntima, en la seducción que se vuelve estrategia y pierde justamente lo que la hacía atractiva: la verdad de lo que sentías.

El error típico son las dos maneras de romper el hueco. Una es forzar: apurar la respuesta, ir detrás, manipular, hacerse el interesante. Las líneas 2 y 3 del hexagrama describen ese apuro con precisión, y las dos avisan mal. La otra es blindarse: hacerse el indiferente para no exponerse, no mostrar interés, quedarse quieto y llamarlo dignidad. El tercer camino del 31 es el más honesto y el más difícil: mostrate abierto de verdad, sin garantía. Ahuecarse es aceptar que alguien puede entrar y también que puede no venir. Y la línea 4 pone el resto: si la mente va y viene agitada, solo llegan los que estabas pensando. La atracción sincera alcanza más lejos que la calculada.

En lo práctico, el hexagrama 31 suele aparecer cuando:

• Te atrae alguien y no sabés si mostrarlo o disimularlo.
• Querés llegar a un grupo, un cliente o un público y estás insistiendo demasiado.
• Un vínculo recién empieza y tenés ganas de acelerarlo.
• Notás que actuás para gustar y que eso te está sacando naturalidad.

You drew 31 and there is someone or something attracting you, or someone you want to reach. It may be a person, a role, an audience, a group. The hexagram says yes, the attraction is real and it can prosper, and then it corrects your method.

You do not attract by pushing: you attract by making room. The mountain holds the lake because it hollowed out, and that is the only manoeuvre the hexagram approves. Everything else, however well meant, is pressure in disguise.

Concretely: the person who wants to be liked and talks non-stop about themselves, when what wins people over is listening. The salesperson who insists, when what closes the deal is understanding the other side of the problem. The candidate who sends a hundred messages instead of doing work that gets noticed. It shows up in intimate life too, in seduction that turns into strategy and loses exactly what made it attractive: the truth of what you were feeling.

The typical mistake takes two forms of breaking the hollow. The first is forcing: rushing the answer, chasing, manipulating, performing interestingness. Lines 2 and 3 describe that haste precisely, and both warn against it. The second is armouring: playing indifferent so as not to be exposed, showing no interest, staying still and calling it dignity. The third way of 31 is the most honest and the hardest: be genuinely open, with no guarantee. Hollowing out means accepting that someone can come in and also that they may not come. And line 4 supplies the rest: if your mind runs back and forth in agitation, only the ones you were thinking about arrive. Sincere attraction reaches further than the calculated kind.

In practice, hexagram 31 tends to come up when:

• Someone attracts you and you cannot tell whether to show it or hide it.
• You want to reach a group, a client or an audience and you are pushing too hard.
• A bond is just beginning and you feel like speeding it up.
• You notice you are performing to be liked and that it is costing you your naturalness.

   El hexagrama recorre el cuerpo de abajo hacia arriba y arranca por el dedo del pie: una intención tan chica que todavía no mueve a nadie. Pensaste en escribirle, te imaginaste el proyecto, sentiste una simpatía. No pasó nada afuera y está bien que así sea. La línea no advierte ni promete, solo registra. Si estás acá, dejá que la atracción crezca un poco antes de convertirla en un plan.

   The hexagram travels up the body and starts at the big toe: an intention so small it still moves nobody. You thought about writing to them, you pictured the project, you felt a liking. Nothing happened on the outside and that is as it should be. The line neither warns nor promises, it simply registers. If you are here, let the attraction grow a little before you turn it into a plan.

2. LíneaLine 2 — El influjo en las pantorrillasInfluence in the calves

   El influjo se muestra en las pantorrillas. Desgracia. Quedarse quieto trae fortuna.The influence shows itself in the calves. Misfortune. Staying still brings good fortune.

   Las piernas ya quieren salir corriendo. Es el impulso de ir detrás antes de que el otro se haya movido, y el texto lo llama desgracia sin vueltas. En lo cotidiano es el doble mensaje a los diez minutos, la propuesta que mandás antes de que te la pidan, la insistencia amable que igual incomoda. La instrucción es incómoda y clarísima: quedate quieto. No es jugar a la indiferencia, es dejar que la atracción tenga tiempo de ser mutua.

   The legs already want to run. It is the impulse to chase before the other person has moved at all, and the text calls it misfortune without hedging. Everyday version: the second message ten minutes later, the proposal you send before anyone asked for it, the friendly insistence that is uncomfortable anyway. The instruction is awkward and perfectly clear: stay still. This is not playing indifferent, it is letting the attraction have time to become mutual.

3. LíneaLine 3 — El influjo en los muslosInfluence in the thighs

   El influjo se muestra en los muslos, que se aferran a lo que va delante. Seguir así humilla.The influence shows itself in the thighs, clinging to whatever goes ahead. Continuing like this is humiliating.

   Los muslos no deciden nada: van adonde va el cuerpo. La línea describe a quien se deja arrastrar por cada impulso o por cada persona que le llama la atención, sin filtro propio. Es el enamoramiento en serie, el sí automático a toda propuesta, la agenda armada por lo que otros necesitan. El texto avisa que eso humilla, no por moralina sino porque terminás sin lugar propio. Antes de seguir a alguien, fijate si vos querías ir para ese lado.

   Thighs decide nothing: they go where the body goes. The line describes someone dragged along by every impulse or every person who catches their eye, with no filter of their own. It is serial infatuation, the automatic yes to any proposal, a calendar built out of what other people need. The text warns that this humiliates, not out of moralising but because you end up with no place of your own. Before following anyone, check whether you wanted to go that way.

4. LíneaLine 4 — La mente que va y vieneThe mind going back and forth

   La perseverancia trae fortuna y el arrepentimiento desaparece. Si la mente va y viene agitada, solo te siguen los amigos en los que estabas pensando.Perseverance brings good fortune and remorse disappears. If the mind goes back and forth in agitation, only the friends you were thinking of will follow.

   La línea del corazón, en el centro del cuerpo y del hexagrama. Dice que la influencia sale de lo que sos, no de lo que calculás: si estás pensando a quién conviene caerle bien, tu alcance se reduce exactamente a esa lista. La versión concreta es dejar de segmentar a la gente por utilidad y hacer las cosas de verdad, con la puerta abierta. El que trabaja para todos llega más lejos que el que trabaja para los cinco que anotó.

   The line of the heart, at the centre of the body and of the hexagram. It says influence comes out of what you are, not what you calculate: if you are working out whom it pays to charm, your reach shrinks to exactly that list. The concrete version is to stop sorting people by usefulness and to do the thing for real, with the door open. Whoever works for everyone reaches further than whoever works for the five names they wrote down.

   La nuca es la parte del cuerpo que uno no mueve a voluntad ni usa para gesticular: es firmeza sin gesto. La línea describe una influencia que ya no necesita mostrarse, la de alguien que sostiene una posición y por eso los demás se orientan. No hay entusiasmo ni seducción acá, y tampoco arrepentimiento. En la práctica es la persona que no discute, cumple, y termina siendo la referencia del grupo sin haberlo pedido nunca.

   The back of the neck is the part of the body you neither move at will nor use for gesturing: firmness without gesture. The line describes an influence that no longer needs to show itself, that of someone who holds a position and so others orient themselves by it. There is no enthusiasm and no seduction here, and no remorse either. In practice it is the person who does not argue, delivers, and ends up as the reference point of the group without ever asking for it.

   Arriba de todo está la boca, y el influjo que llega solo a palabras es el más débil de los seis. No hay condena en el texto, hay medida: se puede convencer hablando, y dura lo que dura una conversación. En lo cotidiano es la promesa que no se cumple, el discurso lindo sin ningún cambio detrás, la charla motivacional del lunes. Si te salió esta línea, revisá cuánto de lo que estás ofreciendo existe fuera de lo que decís.

   At the very top sits the mouth, and influence that reaches only as far as words is the weakest of the six. There is no condemnation in the text, there is measure: you can persuade by talking, and it lasts as long as a conversation lasts. Everyday version: the promise not kept, the fine speech with no change behind it, the Monday motivational talk.
