El dictamen. La merma. Si hay sinceridad, hay fortuna elevada y ningún reproche. Se puede perseverar en esto. Es propicio emprender algo. ¿Y cómo se hace? Con dos cuencos pequeños alcanza para la ofrenda.

La imagen. Al pie de la montaña, el lago: la imagen de la merma. Así la persona noble domina su enojo y refrena sus apetitos.

El 41 está hecho de lago abajo y montaña arriba. El lago se ahonda para que la montaña se levante: lo de abajo se achica y lo de arriba se agranda. Ese es el gesto entero del hexagrama, y por eso la tradición lo asocia al tributo, al impuesto, a la ofrenda que la base entrega a la cima.

La pregunta del Dictamen —"¿y cómo se hace?"— tiene una respuesta antieconómica: con dos cuencos pequeños. Es decir, la ofrenda pobre hecha con verdad vale más que la ofrenda rica hecha por compromiso. Cuando hay poco, la forma se simplifica y lo esencial queda; la sinceridad reemplaza al despliegue.

La Imagen agrega la parte que a nadie le gusta. El trigrama de abajo, el lago, es el placer y el deseo; el de arriba, la montaña, es la quietud. Poner la montaña encima del lago es exactamente eso: aquietar el enojo y refrenar el apetito. En el año, la merma corresponde al tiempo en que la tierra devuelve menos y se vive de lo guardado. No es castigo: es la estación en que se corta lo que sobra para que lo que importa llegue entero al otro lado.

The Judgment. Decrease. With sincerity there is high good fortune and no fault. One may persevere in this. It is favourable to undertake something. And how is it done? Two small bowls are enough for the offering.

The Image. At the foot of the mountain, the lake: the image of Decrease. Thus the noble person masters anger and reins in appetite.

Hexagram 41 is lake below and mountain above. The lake hollows itself out so the mountain can rise: the low is made smaller so the high can be made greater. That single gesture is the whole hexagram, and it is why tradition links it to tribute, to tax, to the offering the base hands upward.

The Judgment asks "and how is it done?" and gives an anti-economic answer: with two small bowls. A poor offering made truthfully is worth more than a rich one made out of obligation. When there is little, the form simplifies and only the essential is left; sincerity replaces display.

The Image adds the part nobody enjoys. The lower trigram, the lake, is pleasure and desire; the upper, the mountain, is stillness. Setting the mountain over the lake is exactly that: quieting anger, reining in appetite. In the year, Decrease is the season when the land gives back less and you live on what you stored. It is not punishment: it is the stretch where you cut what is extra so what matters arrives whole on the other side.

Fijate cómo funciona en lo concreto. Se cortó un ingreso y hay que rearmar el mes; hay menos horas y no entra todo; una relación pide menos intensidad; un proyecto tiene que salir con la mitad de recursos que imaginabas. En todos esos casos hay una decisión escondida: qué sacás. El hexagrama dice que la sacada, hecha a tiempo y con verdad, no genera daño. Dos cuencos alcanzan.

El error típico con el 41 es doble y bastante humano. Uno: recortar lo esencial y conservar la vidriera —bajás la calidad, seguís pagando la apariencia—. Dos: recortar de más y convertirlo en penitencia, achicarse por castigo y andar contando el sacrificio, que es la forma elegante del reproche. La Imagen se anticipa a las dos: habla de dominar el enojo, porque en la escasez el enojo es el gasto más caro que hay.

Hay un tercer camino, y es el que el hexagrama recomienda: convertir la pérdida en poda. No resignarte a tener menos, sino usar el momento para sacarte de encima lo que hace rato no estabas usando —el gasto que no disfrutás, la reunión que no rinde, la explicación que das de más—. La montaña no se levanta porque el lago se quejó; se levanta porque el lago cedió a propósito. Si te queda una sola pregunta después de leer esto, que sea esta: de todo lo que se está achicando, ¿qué parte no querés que vuelva?

En lo práctico, el hexagrama 41 suele aparecer cuando:

• Tenés que hacer lo mismo con menos: menos plata, menos horas, menos gente.
• Estás decidiendo qué recortar y la lista es toda importante.
• Diste de más en un vínculo o en un trabajo y el desgaste ya se nota.
• Querés simplificar algo que se volvió pesado y no sabés por dónde empezar.

You drew 41 and something got smaller: money, time, energy, appetite, the number of people around. The oracle does not answer "hold on until it comes back". It says something less comfortable and more useful: this decrease can be good if you choose what gets lost.

Watch how that works in practice. An income stopped and the month has to be rebuilt; there are fewer hours and not everything fits; a relationship is asking for less intensity; a project has to ship with half the resources you pictured. In each case there is a hidden decision: what you remove. The hexagram says that the removal, made in time and made honestly, does no damage. Two bowls are enough.

The typical mistake with 41 is double and very human. One: cutting the essentials and keeping the shop window — quality drops while you keep paying for appearances. Two: cutting far too much and turning it into penance, shrinking as punishment and keeping score of the sacrifice, which is the elegant form of resentment. The Image anticipates both when it speaks of mastering anger, because in a lean season anger is the single most expensive thing you can spend.

There is a third way, and it is the one the hexagram recommends: turn the loss into pruning. Not resigning yourself to having less, but using the moment to shed what you had stopped using anyway — the expense you do not enjoy, the meeting that returns nothing, the explaining you do too much of. The mountain does not rise because the lake complained; it rises because the lake gave way on purpose. If one question survives this reading, let it be: of everything shrinking right now, which part do you not want back?

In practice, hexagram 41 tends to come up when:

• You have to do the same with less: less money, fewer hours, fewer people.
• You are deciding what to cut and every item on the list looks important.
• You have given too much in a relationship or a job and the wear is showing.
• You want to simplify something that got heavy and you cannot find the first cut.

   Terminada la propia tarea, irse pronto no merece reproche; pero hay que medir cuánto se le quita al otro.With your own task finished, leaving quickly deserves no fault; but weigh how much you are taking from the other.

   Ayudás, resolvés y te vas. La línea aprueba la velocidad y agrega la única advertencia que hace falta: medí cuánto le sacás al que ayudás. Hay una ayuda que deja al otro más chico —hacerle la tarea, resolverle el problema, decidir por él— y esa merma no es la buena. En lo concreto: cerrá tu parte, entregala y retirate, pero dejale al otro lo suyo. Irse a tiempo también es una forma de no quitar de más.

   You help, you solve, you leave. The line approves of the speed and adds the one warning that matters: measure how much you are taking from the person you help. Some help leaves the other smaller — doing their task, solving their problem, deciding for them — and that is not the good kind of decrease. Concretely: close your part, hand it over and step back, but leave them theirs. Leaving in time is also a way of not taking too much.

2. LíneaLine 2 — Sumar sin restarseAdding without subtracting yourself

   La perseverancia es propicia; emprender ahora trae desgracia. Sin mermarse a sí mismo se puede aumentar al otro.Perseverance is favourable; undertaking something now brings misfortune. Without decreasing yourself you can still increase the other.

   La línea más difícil de aceptar para el que siempre da. Dice que se puede sumarle a alguien sin achicarse uno. Si estás pensando en resignar tu proyecto, tu horario o tu plata para sostener a otro, esperá: hoy ese movimiento sale mal. Quedate firme donde estás y ofrecé lo que ya tenés hecho, no lo que te cuesta la salud. Un aporte que te deja intacto vale más, y dura, que un sacrificio que después vas a cobrar.

   The hardest line to accept if you are the one who always gives. It says you can add to someone without shrinking yourself. If you are about to give up your project, your schedule or your money to prop somebody up, wait: today that move goes badly. Hold your ground and offer what you already have, not what costs you your health. A contribution that leaves you intact is worth more, and lasts longer, than a sacrifice you will bill for later.

3. LíneaLine 3 — Tres que caminan, uno que sobraThree who travel, one too many

   Cuando viajan tres, el número se reduce en uno. Cuando alguien viaja solo, encuentra compañía.When three travel together, the number is reduced by one. When one travels alone, a companion is found.

   La línea más citada del hexagrama y la más práctica. De a tres no se decide: siempre hay dos que se entienden y uno que sobra. En un equipo, en una sociedad, en un triángulo afectivo, la merma acá es de personas y llega sola. En lo concreto: si sentís que hay uno de más en la mesa, probablemente lo haya. Y si estás yendo solo, no te apures a llenar el lugar; el hexagrama promete que la compañía aparece cuando hay lugar libre.

   The most quoted line of the hexagram and the most practical. Three people do not decide: two always understand each other and one is left over. In a team, in a partnership, in an emotional triangle, the decrease here is of people and it arrives by itself. Concretely: if you feel there is one too many at the table, there probably is. And if you are travelling alone, do not rush to fill the seat; the hexagram promises company shows up when there is room for it.

4. LíneaLine 4 — Achicar los propios defectosDecreasing your own faults

   Quien reduce sus fallas hace que el otro se acerque contento. Ningún reproche.One who reduces their own faults makes the other hurry over gladly. No blame.

   Acá la merma no es de recursos: es de defectos. Sacar una costumbre tuya —el tono, la tardanza, la ironía, la queja— hace que el otro se acerque, y rápido. Es la línea que corrige el reflejo de pedir que cambie el de enfrente. En lo concreto: elegí una sola cosa, la que ya sabés cuál es, y bajala. No lo anuncies. El cambio de clima llega antes de que lo expliques, y ese es exactamente el punto.

   Here the decrease is not of resources: it is of faults. Removing one habit of yours — the tone, the lateness, the irony, the complaining — makes the other person come closer, and fast. This is the line that corrects the reflex of demanding the change from the one across the table. Concretely: pick a single thing, the one you already know, and lower it. Do not announce it. The change of weather arrives before you explain it, and that is exactly the point.

   Alguien lo aumenta de verdad; ni diez pares de tortugas podrían contradecirlo. Fortuna elevada.Someone truly increases him; not even ten pairs of tortoises could contradict it. High good fortune.

   La mejor línea del hexagrama. Justo cuando estabas dispuesto a tener menos, llega ayuda de un lado que no calculaste: un cliente, una herencia chica, alguien que te recomienda sin que se lo pidas. Las tortugas eran el oráculo más caro de la antigüedad, y la frase dice que ni consultándolas diez veces vas a encontrar un argumento en contra. En lo concreto: aceptá sin regatear ni sentir deuda. Lo que llega así es de la situación, no un favor personal que después se cobra.

   The best line of the hexagram. Right when you had accepted having less, help arrives from a side you never calculated: a client, a small inheritance, somebody recommending you without being asked. Tortoises were antiquity's most expensive oracle, and the phrase says that ten consultations would not find you an argument against it. Concretely: accept without haggling and without feeling in debt. What arrives this way belongs to the situation, not to a personal favour that gets billed later.

   Aumentar sin mermar a los demás no merece reproche. Perseverar trae fortuna. Es propicio emprender algo. Se ganan colaboradores y ya no se tiene una casa aparte.To increase without decreasing others is beyond blame. Perseverance brings good fortune. It is favourable to undertake something. One gains helpers and no longer has a separate house.

   El final del ciclo: crecés, y tu crecimiento no le saca a nadie. Esa es la definición de la línea. "Ya no se tiene una casa aparte" quiere decir que tu bien y el del grupo dejaron de ser dos cosas distintas: lo que te sirve a vos les sirve a los que trabajan con vos. En lo concreto: es el momento de abrir el juego, repartir tarea y dejar de administrar todo solo. La merma terminó; lo que sigue se sostiene entre varios.

   The end of the cycle: you grow, and your growth takes from nobody. That is the whole definition of this line. "No longer has a separate house" means your good and the group's stopped being two different things: what serves you serves the people working with you. Concretely: this is the moment to open the game, hand out work and stop administering everything alone. The decrease is over; what comes next is held up by several pairs of hands.
