El dictamen. El caldero. Elevada ventura. Logro.
La imagen. El fuego sobre la madera: la imagen del caldero. Así el noble afirma su destino poniendo su posición en su lugar correcto.
El 50 dibuja un objeto real. Abajo está el viento y la madera (Xun), arriba el fuego (Li): leña ardiendo debajo de una olla. Y la figura misma tiene forma de caldero, si se la mira de abajo hacia arriba: la línea partida de abajo son las patas, las tres líneas enteras del medio son la panza llena, la quinta son las asas y la sexta el aro por donde se lo levanta.
El ding no era una olla cualquiera. Era el caldero ritual de bronce donde se cocinaba la ofrenda para los antepasados y para los sabios invitados a la corte; poseer el ding era poseer el mandato de gobernar. Por eso el hexagrama va inmediatamente después de la revolución: el 49 saca lo viejo, el 50 cocina lo nuevo.
Lo que la Imagen prescribe se entiende desde ahí. El fuego solo sirve si hay un recipiente que lo contenga y una comida que valga la pena transformar. Afirmar el destino poniendo la posición en su lugar significa exactamente eso: ocupar bien el sitio propio, porque la transformación no ocurre por intensidad sino por permanecer en el fuego el tiempo justo, dentro de una forma que aguante.

The Image. Fire over wood: the image of the Cauldron. Thus the noble steadies his destiny by putting his position in its right place.
Hexagram 50 draws a real object. Below is wind and wood (Xun), above is fire (Li): burning wood under a pot. And the figure itself has the shape of a cauldron, read from the bottom up: the broken line at the base is the legs, the three solid lines in the middle are the full belly, the fifth is the handles and the sixth the ring it is lifted by.
The ding was no ordinary pot. It was the ritual bronze cauldron in which the offering was cooked for the ancestors and for the sages invited to court; to hold the ding was to hold the mandate to govern. That is why this hexagram comes straight after Revolution: 49 removes the old, 50 cooks the new.
What the Image prescribes follows from that. Fire is only useful if a vessel contains it and something worth transforming is inside. Steadying your destiny by putting your position in its right place means exactly this: occupying your own place well, because transformation happens not through intensity but through staying in the fire the right length of time, inside a form that holds.

Sacaste el 50 y la pregunta era sobre algo que querés que salga bien: un proyecto, una casa, una relación, una versión tuya. La respuesta del hexagrama es una cocina. Hay tres cosas que tienen que estar: el fuego, los ingredientes y la olla. Casi siempre te falta una sola, y casi nunca es la que creés.
El caldero es el hexagrama de la transformación lenta y deliberada. Nada de lo que está adentro sirve crudo: la experiencia, el talento, la buena intención y hasta el dolor son materia prima, no plato terminado. Lo que convierte la materia en alimento no es la intensidad del fuego sino el tiempo sostenido dentro de una forma que aguanta. Por eso el 50 promete elevada ventura sin pedirte esfuerzo heroico: te pide constancia y un recipiente sano.
El error típico tiene dos caras. Una es subir el fuego: más horas, más ansiedad, más anuncios, revolver la olla cada cinco minutos para ver si ya está. La otra es cambiar de olla: empezar de nuevo con otro método, otra ciudad, otro socio, justo cuando lo anterior estaba empezando a tomar sabor.
El tercer camino del 50 es el menos épico y el que funciona: ocupar bien tu lugar y dejar cocinar. Revisá las patas —la base material, el descanso, la plata, la salud— porque la línea 1 avisa que un caldero volcado pierde todo. Revisá las asas —cómo te llega la ayuda, quién te sostiene— porque la línea 3 avisa que sin asas el mejor guiso queda intocable. Y después, esperá. Mientras tanto, cuidá el fuego: la constancia diaria, aunque sea chiquita, es la única clase de calor que transforma algo de verdad. El plato se sirve solo cuando está.
En lo práctico, el hexagrama 50 suele aparecer cuando:
- Un proyecto que necesita meses de cocción y vos querés verlo listo ya.
- Estás construyendo algo nuevo sobre las cenizas de algo que terminó.
- Tenés buen material y ninguna estructura donde ponerlo: ideas sueltas, notas, talento sin oficio.
- Alguien te ofrece un lugar y dudás si te corresponde ocuparlo.
You drew 50 and the question was about something you want to turn out well: a project, a home, a relationship, a version of yourself. The answer is a kitchen. Three things have to be present: the fire, the ingredients and the pot. Almost always only one is missing, and almost never the one you think.
The Cauldron is the hexagram of slow, deliberate transformation. Nothing inside it is any use raw: experience, talent, good intentions and even pain are raw material, not a finished dish. What turns material into food is not the intensity of the fire but time sustained inside a form that holds. That is why 50 promises supreme good fortune without asking for heroic effort: it asks for constancy and a sound vessel.
The typical mistake has two faces. One is turning up the heat: more hours, more anxiety, more announcements, stirring the pot every five minutes to see whether it is ready. The other is changing pots: starting over with another method, another city, another partner, exactly when the old one was beginning to take on flavour.
The third way of 50 is the least epic and the one that works: occupy your place well and let it cook. Check the legs — the material base, your rest, your money, your health — because line 1 warns that an overturned cauldron loses everything. Check the handles — how help reaches you, who holds you up — because line 3 warns that without handles the best stew stays untouchable. And then wait. In the meantime, tend the fire: daily constancy, however small, is the only kind of heat that truly transforms anything. The dish is served only when it is ready.
In practice, hexagram 50 tends to come up when:
- A project that needs months of cooking and you want it ready now.
- You are building something new on the ashes of something that ended.
- You have good material and no structure to put it in: loose ideas, notes, talent without a craft.
- Someone offers you a position and you doubt whether it is yours to take.

El caldero se vuelca sobre sus patas: conviene sacar lo podrido. Sin culpa.The cauldron is tipped over on its legs: it is useful to remove what has spoiled. No blame.
Empezar por vaciar. La primera línea da vuelta la olla para que caiga lo que se pudrió adentro, y el I Ching no lo considera un fracaso sino la primera tarea. En lo cotidiano: antes de sumar un método nuevo, sacá los restos del anterior. Cancelá suscripciones muertas, cerrá los proyectos zombis, terminá las conversaciones que quedaron abiertas. También vale para lo personal: hay resentimientos viejos que ocupan exactamente el lugar donde iría lo nuevo. Un recipiente limpio ya es medio plato.
Begin by emptying. The first line tips the pot over so that whatever rotted inside falls out, and the I Ching treats this not as failure but as the first task. In daily life: before adding a new method, remove the remains of the last one. Cancel dead subscriptions, close the zombie projects, finish the conversations left hanging. It works personally too: some old resentments sit in exactly the place the new thing would go. A clean vessel is already half the dish.

Tenés algo bueno y se nota, y eso genera envidia alrededor. La línea es tranquilizadora y a la vez exigente: no te pueden dañar mientras el contenido sea real y vos no salgas a defenderlo. El daño entra por la puerta de la reacción, no por la del contenido. En concreto: no compares, no expliques de más, no bajes tu trabajo para que otro esté cómodo. Seguí cocinando. La mejor respuesta a la envidia es que el plato exista y esté bueno.
You have something good and it shows, and that stirs envy around you. The line is reassuring and demanding at once: nobody can harm you as long as the content is real and you do not go out to defend it. Harm comes in through the door of reaction, not through the content. Concretely: do not compare, do not over-explain, do not shrink your work so someone else feels comfortable. Keep cooking. The best answer to envy is that the dish exists and is good.

La comida está buenísima y nadie la prueba, porque el caldero no tiene por dónde agarrarse. Es la línea del talento sin acceso: la tesis que no se publica, la propuesta que nadie entiende, la persona que se ofrece mal. No hay nada malo en tu contenido, hay algo mal en la interfaz. Trabajá las asas: la explicación en una frase, el precio, la puerta de entrada, el pedido de ayuda concreto. El texto promete lluvia: el bloqueo se destraba, pero primero hay que aceptarlo.
The food is excellent and nobody tastes it, because the cauldron has nothing to grip. This is the line of talent without access: the thesis that never gets published, the proposal nobody understands, the person who offers themselves badly. There is nothing wrong with your content, something is wrong with the interface. Work on the handles: the one-sentence explanation, the price, the way in, the concrete request for help. The text promises rain: the blockage clears, but first it has to be admitted.

La única línea francamente oscura del hexagrama, y siempre por lo mismo: se cargó más peso del que la base aguanta. Aceptaste un puesto sin el equipo, un préstamo sin el ingreso, una promesa sin el tiempo. Lo que se vuelca no es solo el proyecto: también la reputación, porque el que se mancha es el que servía. Si te salió la cuarta, no busques más ingredientes. Reforzá las patas o soltá parte de la carga hoy, antes de que se derrame sola.
The only frankly dark line of the hexagram, and always for the same reason: more weight was loaded than the base can carry. You took a post without the team, a loan without the income, a promise without the time. What spills is not only the project: it is the reputation too, because the one who serves is the one who gets soiled. If you drew the fourth line, do not look for more ingredients. Reinforce the legs or let go of part of the load today, before it spills on its own.

La quinta es la línea de la madurez discreta: el amarillo es el color del centro y la moderación, y las asas son lo que permite que otros participen. Estás en condiciones de ser el recipiente, no solo el cocinero. En concreto: te piden que coordines, que enseñes, que pongas tu nombre. Aceptalo sin inflarte y sin achicarte. Lo que el texto pide es perseverancia, no brillo: sostener la temperatura pareja durante mucho tiempo es todo el mérito de esta línea.
The fifth is the line of quiet maturity: yellow is the colour of the centre and of moderation, and handles are what let others take part. You are in a position to be the vessel, not only the cook. Concretely: you are asked to coordinate, to teach, to put your name on something. Accept without inflating and without shrinking. What the text asks for is perseverance, not brilliance: holding an even temperature for a long time is the whole merit of this line.

El jade es duro y suave a la vez: no se raya y no quema al tacto. La línea final describe a alguien que llegó a tener firmeza sin dureza, y por eso todo le resulta propicio. Es la única línea del I Ching que no advierte nada. En la vida concreta aparece cuando alguien ya no necesita imponerse para que su criterio pese: aconseja poco, decide claro y la gente lo busca. Si te salió la sexta, servite y servile a otros: el plato ya está.
Jade is hard and smooth at once: it does not scratch and it does not burn the hand. The final line describes someone who has reached firmness without hardness, and so everything turns out favourable. It is one of the very few lines in the I Ching that warns of nothing. In real life it shows up when someone no longer needs to impose themselves for their judgement to count: they advise little, decide plainly, and people seek them out. If you drew the sixth line, serve yourself and serve others: the dish is ready.
