La imagen. El fuego por encima del agua: la imagen del estado previo a la consumación. Así el noble distingue las cosas con cuidado, para que cada una ocupe su lugar.

El fuego sube y el agua baja. En el 64 están puestos de manera tal que se alejan uno del otro: nada colabora todavía, cada elemento tira para su lado. Y hay algo más, que es el espejo exacto del hexagrama anterior: acá las seis líneas están todas en el lugar equivocado, yang donde iba yin y al revés. Desorden total. Pero cada línea tiene su correspondencia arriba o abajo, así que todo puede ordenarse. Máximo desorden, máxima posibilidad.

Que este sea el último hexagrama del libro es una decisión deliberada de la tradición. El I Ching no termina en la consumación, termina un paso antes, porque después de cada cruce viene otro río.

La imagen del Dictamen es un zorro viejo cruzando el hielo con las orejas atentas, escuchando el agua debajo. El zorrito, en cambio, se confía cuando ya ve la otra orilla, levanta la cola y se la moja justo al final. El peligro no está en el medio del río: está en los últimos metros.

Por eso la Imagen manda distinguir: cuando todo está mezclado, el primer trabajo no es avanzar sino separar y poner cada cosa en su sitio.

The Judgment. Before Completion. Success. But if the little fox, when it has almost finished crossing, gets its tail wet, there is nothing that is favourable.

The Image. Fire above water: the image of the condition before completion. Thus the noble one distinguishes things carefully, so that each finds its place.

Fire rises and water falls. In 64 they are placed so that they move apart from one another: nothing collaborates yet, each element pulls its own way. And there is something more, the exact mirror of the previous hexagram: here all six lines are in the wrong place, yang where yin belonged and the other way round. Total disorder. But every line has its correspondence above or below, so everything can be put in order. Maximum disorder, maximum possibility.

That this is the last hexagram of the book is a deliberate decision of the tradition. The I Ching does not end in completion, it ends one step before, because after each crossing comes another river.

The picture in the Judgment is an old fox crossing the ice with its ears alert, listening to the water underneath. The young fox, by contrast, grows confident once it can see the far bank, lifts its tail and gets it wet right at the end. The danger is not in the middle of the river: it is in the last few metres.

That is why the Image orders distinguishing: when everything is mixed, the first job is not to advance but to separate and put each thing in its place.

El segundo es abandonar en el noventa por ciento y llamarlo realismo. Con el 64 eso duele especialmente, porque todas las piezas ya están y solo falta acomodarlas.

El tercer camino está en la Imagen y es de una practicidad casi insultante: separá. Hacé la lista, dividí el asunto en partes, poné cada cosa donde va y ocupate de una sola por vez. Lo que parece un caos suele ser cinco cosas mezcladas. Cuando cada una tiene su lugar, el cruce se hace solo.

Y guardá el festejo para después. La línea 6 muestra a alguien brindando con confianza legítima que igual termina con la cabeza mojada: la celebración anticipada es la última trampa del libro entero. Y si estás en la parte revuelta y no en el tramo final, empezá por lo único que ya sabés dónde va: ordenar una sola cosa suele alcanzar para que el resto encuentre su sitio.

En lo práctico, el hexagrama 64 suele aparecer cuando:

• Estás en el último tramo de algo y se hace eterno.
• Tenés todas las piezas y no sabés en qué orden van.
• Terminaste una etapa y ya asoma otra sin descanso en el medio.
• Todo está revuelto y necesitás por dónde empezar a ordenar.

You drew 64 and you are almost certainly near the end of something that will not end: the thesis in its last chapter, the move half packed, the launch pushed another week, the conversation you have been having in instalments for three months. It also shows up when everything is jumbled and you do not know where to start.

The hexagram is optimistic and says so up front: success. But it attaches a famous condition. You are close, and that is exactly what makes this the dangerous stretch: the fox does not get its tail wet in the middle of the river, it gets it wet once it can see the bank.

The typical mistakes are the usual two. The first is rushing the close: sending it without checking, forcing the decision, attacking before you have the means, which is precisely what line 3 warns against. The second is abandoning at ninety per cent and calling it realism. With 64 that stings especially, because every piece is already there and all that is missing is arranging them.

The third way is in the Image and it is almost insultingly practical: separate. Make the list, split the matter into parts, put each thing where it goes and deal with one at a time. What looks like chaos is usually five things mixed together. Once each has its place, the crossing happens by itself.

And save the celebration for afterwards. Line 6 shows someone drinking with legitimate confidence who still ends up with a wet head: celebrating early is the last trap in the entire book. And if you are in the jumbled part rather than the final stretch, start with the one thing whose place you already know: sorting a single item is usually enough for the rest to find where it goes.

In practice, hexagram 64 tends to come up when:

• You are in the last stretch of something and it is dragging on forever.
• You have all the pieces and do not know what order they go in.
• You finished one stage and another is already showing up with no break in between.
• Everything is jumbled and you need somewhere to start sorting.

The text speaks not of misfortune but of embarrassment, which is lighter: nobody died, you looked bad. Go back to the bank, prepare properly and set out again, this time knowing what you will say.

   You have strength and appetite and the text asks you to hold them back a little longer. It is not a final stop: it is rationing. Conditions that do not depend on you are still missing, and setting out now would waste the momentum for nothing. Meanwhile, persevere quietly at your own work: preparing, ordering, having everything ready. When the moment opens you will be whole, and that is the entire advantage you need.

La salida es buscar aliados y recursos afuera antes de dar el paso. Si vas a jugarte, no te juegues solo ni improvisando: conseguí a quien te falta y recién ahí metete al agua.

   The most contradictory line in the book and the most honest: do not attack, but cross. Translated, do not force the outcome on your own with what you have, and at the same time do not stay put. The way out is to seek allies and resources outside before taking the step. If you are going to commit, do not commit alone or by improvising: find whoever is missing and only then get into the water.

   Here the real decision is made and it costs. The text speaks of shaking because there is fear, and even so you have to go in: it is the line of the person who faces the long matter, who withstands the hard conversation, who begins the treatment. Nothing resolves in a week, but after three years the reward is large and concrete. If you drew this line, the answer is yes, with patience.

In everyday terms it is the moment you finally understand what you were doing and why, and the people around you start to see it too. Do not spend it on explanations; use it to finish.
