El dictamen. El trabajo en lo echado a perder tiene éxito elevado. Es propicio cruzar las grandes aguas. Tres días antes del comienzo, tres días después del comienzo.

La imagen. El viento sopla al pie de la montaña: la imagen de lo echado a perder. Así el noble sacude a la gente y fortalece su espíritu.

El nombre chino del 18, Gǔ, se escribía con el dibujo de un cuenco con gusanos adentro: comida que quedó guardada demasiado tiempo. La figura dice lo mismo con dos trigramas: el viento sopla abajo, contra la falda de la montaña, y la montaña lo detiene. Aire que no circula, agua que no corre, una casa cerrada durante meses. Nada explotó; simplemente se pudrió despacio.

Por eso la tradición no lee este hexagrama como un castigo sino como una herencia. Lo echado a perder rara vez lo arruinó quien tiene que arreglarlo: viene de una gestión anterior, de una costumbre familiar, de una decisión que en su momento pareció práctica. El Dictamen promete éxito elevado y hasta invita a cruzar las grandes aguas, porque reparar es una empresa mayor y vale la pena emprenderla.

Los tres días antes y los tres días después son la parte que casi todo el mundo saltea: antes, entender cómo se pudrió; después, cuidar que no vuelva a pasar. Sin esas dos mitades, cualquier reparación dura una temporada.

The Judgment. Work on what has been spoiled has great success. It is favourable to cross the great water. Three days before the start, three days after the start.

The Image. The wind blows at the foot of the mountain: the image of Decay. Thus the noble stirs up the people and strengthens their spirit.

The Chinese name of 18, Gǔ, was written as a bowl with worms inside: food left stored for too long. The figure says the same thing with two trigrams: the wind blows down below, against the flank of the mountain, and the mountain stops it. Air that does not circulate, water that does not run, a house shut up for months. Nothing exploded; it simply rotted slowly.

That is why tradition reads this hexagram not as a punishment but as an inheritance. What has been spoiled was rarely ruined by whoever has to repair it: it comes from a previous management, a family habit, a decision that once looked practical. The Judgment promises great success and even invites you to cross the great water, because repair is a major undertaking and worth beginning.

The three days before and the three days after are the part almost everyone skips: before, understanding how it rotted; after, making sure it does not happen again. Without those two halves, any repair lasts a season.

El oráculo no te pide denunciar al culpable: te pide reparar. Y avisa que la reparación es un proyecto, no un impulso. Cruzar las grandes aguas quiere decir que hay que meterse de verdad, con plazos, con incomodidad y con la posibilidad de perder algo en el camino.

El error típico del 18 tiene dos versiones. La primera es la denuncia: pasás meses explicando de quién fue la culpa y mientras tanto el cuenco sigue con los gusanos. La segunda es el parche: arreglás lo visible en un fin de semana heroico, quedás aliviado, y en seis meses está igual porque nunca miraste la causa.

El tercer camino es el de los tres días. Antes de tocar nada, dedicá un tiempo real a entender cómo se llegó hasta acá: qué acuerdo tácito lo permitió, a quién le convenía, qué conflicto evitó. Después de arreglarlo, dedicá otro tiempo igual a poner el mecanismo que impide la recaída: una revisión mensual, una conversación fija, una regla escrita que no dependa de la memoria de nadie. La reparación que dura no es la más enérgica, es la que toca la condición que produjo el daño. Y el aire al pie de la montaña vuelve a moverse recién cuando alguien decide abrir la ventana.

You drew 18 and something, yours or inherited, has spoiled slowly: a partnership dragging murky accounts, a house where nobody names the subject, a habit that started as a remedy and stayed as a problem, a job held together with patches for years. There was no disaster. There was time.

The oracle does not ask you to denounce the guilty party: it asks you to repair. And it warns that repair is a project, not an impulse. Crossing the great water means getting properly involved, with deadlines, with discomfort, and with the chance of losing something along the way.

The typical mistake with 18 comes in two versions. The first is the accusation: you spend months explaining whose fault it was while the bowl keeps its worms. The second is the patch: you fix what shows in one heroic weekend, feel relieved, and six months later it is the same, because you never looked at the cause.

The third way is the way of the three days. Before touching anything, spend real time understanding how it got here: what tacit agreement allowed it, who it suited, what conflict it avoided. After fixing it, spend the same amount of time installing the mechanism that prevents relapse: a monthly review, a standing conversation, a written rule that does not depend on anybody memory. The repair that lasts is not the most energetic one, it is the one that touches the condition that produced the damage. And the air at the foot of the mountain starts moving again only when somebody decides to open the window.

In practice, hexagram 18 tends to come up when:

• When an old problem returns for the third time wearing a different face.
• When you inherit a responsibility together with its mess.

La línea habla de una herencia reciente: la regla que dejó el que se fue, el sistema que armó tu antecesor, la manera de hacer las cosas que aprendiste en tu casa. Repararla no deshonra a nadie; al contrario, es lo que salva el nombre. Hay peligro porque vas a tener que tocar algo que alguien quiere, y hay fortuna porque estás a tiempo. Empezá por lo que todavía nadie defiende.

   You are at the beginning of the decay and it is still reversible. The line speaks of a recent inheritance: the rule left by the one who departed, the system your predecessor built, the way of doing things you learned at home. Repairing it dishonours nobody; on the contrary, it is what saves the name. There is danger because you will have to touch something someone loves, and there is good fortune because you are in time. Start with whatever nobody is defending yet.

   Reparar lo que estropeó la madre. No conviene ser demasiado insistente.Repairing what the mother spoiled. It is not fitting to be too insistent.

   Acá el daño está en la zona blanda: el afecto, la costumbre de cuidar de más, la protección que terminó impidiendo crecer. La línea pide una mano suave. Si entrás con rigor y con planillas, la persona se cierra y perdés la posibilidad de arreglar nada. Se corrige de a poco, sin humillar y sin discursos. Un paso por semana. Insistir de más acá no acelera: rompe el vínculo, que era justamente lo único que sostenía el asunto.

   Here the damage sits in the soft zone: affection, the habit of caring too much, the protection that ended up preventing growth. The line asks for a gentle hand. Go in with rigour and spreadsheets and the person shuts down, and you lose any chance of fixing anything. It is corrected little by little, without humiliation and without speeches. One step a week. Insisting too hard here does not speed things up: it breaks the bond, which was the only thing holding the matter together.

   Fuiste con todo, dijiste de más y algo se rompió en la forma. La línea te tranquiliza: el fondo está bien, el exceso es de estilo. Vas a lamentar una frase, un mensaje mandado a la noche, una decisión tomada delante de gente. No te castigues por eso ni retrocedas del arreglo. Corregí el modo, pedí disculpas por el modo y seguí con la reparación. Es preferible este error al del que no hace nada por no incomodar a nadie.

   You went in hard, said too much, and something broke in the manner of it. The line reassures you: the substance is right, the excess is stylistic. You will regret a sentence, a message sent at night, a decision taken in front of an audience. Do not punish yourself for it and do not back out of the repair. Correct the manner, apologise for the manner, and carry on with the work. This mistake is better than the one made by the person who does nothing so as not to make anybody uncomfortable.

   La línea más incómoda del hexagrama. Ves el problema, tenés claro cómo se arregla y elegís convivir. Por paz, por miedo, porque no te toca a vos. Lo que el texto adelanta es simple: la tolerancia no lo detiene, lo posterga, y el costo llega igual, más caro y con público. Si estás acá, no hace falta una gran cruzada: hace falta una decisión chica y firme esta semana. Nombrar el asunto en voz alta ya rompe el pacto de silencio.

   The most uncomfortable line of the hexagram. You see the problem, you know how it is fixed, and you choose to live with it. For peace, out of fear, because it is not your job. What the text predicts is simple: tolerance does not stop it, it postpones it, and the cost arrives anyway, dearer and in public. If you are here, no great crusade is needed: one small firm decision this week is. Naming the thing out loud already breaks the pact of silence.

   La reparación sale bien y además se ve. No la hiciste solo: convocaste a los que entendían del tema, repartiste el trabajo, dejaste que cada uno arreglara su parte. Esa es la razón del elogio. La línea marca el estilo maduro del 18: no el héroe que salva la casa de madrugada, sino el que organiza para que la casa se sostenga incluso sin él. Si estás acá, aceptá el reconocimiento sin quedártelo todo y dejá el mecanismo escrito antes de irte.

   The repair works and it also shows. You did not do it alone: you called in the people who understood the matter, shared the work out, let each of them fix their own part. That is the reason for the praise. The line marks the mature style of 18: not the hero who saves the house at dawn, but the one who organises things so the house holds up even without him.    Alguien se corre de la trama. No repara esta casa porque su tarea es otra: pensar, enseñar, sostener un criterio que después le sirve a todos. La línea lo permite, y también te obliga a ser honesto. Retirarse hacia arriba es legítimo; usar la palabra vocación para no ensuciarse las manos, no. Si esta reparación no te corresponde, decilo claro, entregá lo que sepas y andate. Lo que no vale es quedarte adentro sin hacerte cargo de nada.

   Someone steps out of the plot. He does not repair this house because his task is another one: to think, to teach, to hold a standard that later serves everybody. The line permits it, and it also forces you to be honest. Withdrawing upward is legitimate; using the word vocation to keep your hands clean is not. If this repair is not yours, say so plainly, hand over what you know, and go. What does not work is staying inside and taking charge of nothing.
