El dictamen. El seguimiento tiene éxito elevado desde el origen. Es propicio perseverar. No hay falta.

La imagen. El trueno dentro del lago: la imagen del seguimiento. Así el noble, al caer la noche, entra en la casa a descansar y reponerse.

El 17 pone el trueno, el hijo mayor, la energía que se mueve, por debajo del lago, la hija menor, la alegría. Lo fuerte queda abajo de lo suave, y esa es toda la lección de la figura: el que tiene fuerza se coloca por debajo para poder ser seguido. En la naturaleza es la escena del otoño, cuando el trueno deja de retumbar y se recoge dentro del agua hasta la primavera siguiente.

Por eso la Imagen habla de la noche. Al caer el sol el noble no sigue trabajando: entra, come, descansa. No es pereza, es seguimiento del ritmo. Quien pretende ir en contra del día y de la noche termina sin fuerza para ninguno de los dos.

El Dictamen agrega la condición: el seguimiento trae éxito elevado sólo si hay perseverancia. Seguir sin criterio es dejarse arrastrar; seguir con criterio es adaptarse. La tradición ubica acá la enseñanza del que conduce dejándose conducir: primero se sirve al momento y después el momento sirve.

The Judgment. Following has great success from the source. Perseverance is favourable. There is no fault.

The Image. Thunder within the lake: the image of Following. Thus at nightfall the noble goes indoors to rest and recover.

Hexagram 17 places thunder, the eldest son, the energy that moves, beneath the lake, the youngest daughter, joy. The strong sits below the yielding, and that is the whole lesson of the figure: whoever holds force places it underneath in order to be followed. In nature it is the autumn scene, when thunder stops rolling and withdraws into the water until the following spring.

That is why the Image speaks of night. When the sun goes down the noble does not keep working: he goes in, eats, rests. It is not laziness, it is following the rhythm. Whoever tries to work against day and night ends up with strength for neither.

The Judgment adds the condition: following brings great success only where there is perseverance. Following without a standard is being dragged; following with a standard is adapting. Tradition places here the teaching of the one who leads by letting himself be led: first you serve the moment, then the moment serves you.

Lo que el oráculo pide es adaptarte al momento sin entregar el criterio. El trueno abajo del lago no desaparece: se guarda. Podés ceder en la forma, en el horario, en el orden de las cosas, y no ceder en el fondo. Eso es el seguimiento maduro.

En lo concreto aparece así: aceptás el plan de otro porque es mejor que el tuyo, no porque te da miedo discutir. Dejás de empujar un proyecto en enero porque enero no es el mes, y lo retomás cuando el clima cambia. Te vas a dormir aunque quede trabajo, porque mañana rendís tres veces más.

El error típico del 17 tiene dos caras. Una es la obediencia: hacés lo que hace el grupo y después no reconocés de dónde salió tu vida. La otra es la testarudez: no seguís nada, ni siquiera a tu propio cansancio, y confundís rigidez con carácter. El tercer camino es el que propone la figura: elegir a conciencia a quién y a qué seguís, seguirlo de verdad, y descansar cuando el día se apaga. El que sigue bien es el único que después puede ser seguido sin tener que exigirlo.

En lo práctico, el hexagrama 17 suele aparecer cuando:

You drew 17 and the question probably had an "do I go along with it or do it my way" inside it. The hexagram does not choose for you: it asks what you are following. Because follow you will. People follow a habit, a fear, a person, a schedule, an old idea of who they are. The difference between a good 17 and a bad one is whether you chose it or it chose you.

What the oracle asks is that you adapt to the moment without handing over your standard. The thunder beneath the lake does not disappear: it is stored. You can yield on the form, the timing, the order of things, and not yield on the substance. That is mature following.

Concretely it looks like this: you accept someone else plan because it is better than yours, not because arguing scares you. You stop pushing a project in January because January is not the month, and pick it up when the weather turns. You go to bed with work left over, because tomorrow you will do three times as much.

The typical mistake with 17 has two faces. One is obedience: you do what the group does and later cannot recognise where your life came from. The other is stubbornness: you follow nothing, not even your own tiredness, and mistake rigidity for character. The third way is the one the figure proposes: choose consciously who and what you follow, follow it for real, and rest when the day goes dark. Whoever follows well is the only one who can later be followed without demanding it.

In practice, hexagram 17 tends to come up when:

• When you are forcing a rhythm that your body or the calendar will not support.
• When you want to be followed and have not yet followed anyone.

El peligro es encerrarte a rumiar el cambio solo, en tu cabeza, y llamarlo criterio. Salí por la puerta: hablá con gente que no piensa como vos, mirá lo que hacen otros, dejate corregir. Un criterio nuevo se prueba afuera, nunca adentro.

   Something you took as fixed has moved: the boss changed, the rule changed, your own opinion changed. The line says that is fine, as long as you go out and test it. The danger is shutting yourself away to chew the shift over alone, in your head, and calling that a standard. Go out of the door: talk to people who do not think like you, watch what others do, let yourself be corrected. A new standard is proven outside, never inside.

   Elegiste lo fácil, lo cercano, lo que te halaga, y por eso quedó afuera lo que te hacía crecer. No es una condena moral: es una cuenta. La atención es finita y lo que le das a uno se lo sacás al otro. En concreto: la charla cómoda que se come la hora del estudio, el cliente chico que te ocupa el día del cliente grande, la relación tibia que te distrae de la que importa. Elegí de nuevo, con los ojos abiertos.

   You chose the easy thing, the near thing, the thing that flatters you, and so what made you grow was left out. It is not a moral verdict: it is arithmetic. Attention is finite and what you give to one you take from the other. Concretely: the comfortable chat that eats the study hour, the small client who takes up the big client day, the lukewarm relationship that distracts you from the one that matters. Choose again, with your eyes open.

   Ahora elegiste bien y duele igual, porque toda elección deja algo atrás. Seguiste al que te enseña, al proyecto serio, al camino largo, y perdiste la comodidad del anterior. La línea confirma que encontrás lo que buscabas y avisa que la nostalgia va a golpear la puerta. Sostené. Lo que dejaste no era malo: era chico. Perseverar acá quiere decir no volver a buscarlo cada vez que el camino nuevo se pone exigente.

   Now you chose well and it still hurts, because every choice leaves something behind. You followed the one who teaches you, the serious project, the long road, and you lost the comfort of the previous one. The line confirms that you find what you were looking for and warns you that nostalgia will knock. Hold. What you left was not bad: it was small. Persevering here means not going back for it every time the new road gets demanding.

   Te están siguiendo, y esa es la trampa. Gente que te elogia, que repite lo que decís, que se acomoda a tu alrededor porque le conviene. Es agradable y es peligroso: si te apoyás ahí, terminás gobernado por el aplauso. La salida que da la línea es de una honestidad incómoda: andá tu camino a la vista de todos, con lo que eso te cueste en simpatías. Los que se quedaban por conveniencia se van; los que se quedan sirven.

   People are following you, and that is the trap. People who praise you, who repeat what you say, who arrange themselves around you because it suits them. It is pleasant and it is dangerous: lean on that and you end up governed by applause. The way out the line gives is uncomfortably honest: walk your own road in plain sight, whatever it costs you in popularity. The ones who stayed out of convenience leave; the ones who stay are of use.

Cuando el seguimiento se dirige a lo que vale, la pregunta de si perdés libertad deja de tener sentido, porque nadie te está usando. Si estás acá, no lo negocies a la baja: sostener el estándar es todo el trabajo.

   The cleanest line of the hexagram. You are not following a person: you are following something good, and you do it with an open chest. It can be a teacher, a craft, a way of treating people. When following aims at what is worth it, the question of whether you are losing freedom stops making sense, because nobody is using you. If you are here, do not negotiate it downward: holding the standard is the whole job.

   You are no longer following out of convenience or habit: you became committed, and the commitment now binds you. It is the line of the one who withdraws from the noise and is fetched back anyway, because he is needed. In daily life it is the moment when a bond, a community or a task asks you for explicit loyalty, with a name and a ceremony. It is not a burden if the destination matters to you. Accept the tie, or say so now rather than later.
