El dictamen. El entusiasmo. Es propicio nombrar ayudantes y poner en marcha a las tropas.

La imagen. El trueno sale rugiendo de la tierra: la imagen del entusiasmo. Así los antiguos reyes hacían música para honrar el mérito y la ofrecían con esplendor a lo más alto, invitando a sus antepasados.

Arriba el Trueno, abajo la Tierra. Es la tormenta que por fin estalla después del invierno: la misma energía que en el hexagrama 24 estaba enterrada y en silencio, ahora sale a la superficie y se escucha. Una sola línea de yang, en el cuarto lugar, y las cinco de yin agrupándose alrededor de ella. Así funciona el entusiasmo: no es una masa que se enciende sola, es un punto que las demás siguen.

El carácter 豫 tiene dos sentidos y los dos importan. Uno es alegría, entusiasmo, elación. El otro es previsión, preparativo, tener las cosas listas de antemano. En chino clásico son la misma palabra, y esa coincidencia es la enseñanza entera del hexagrama: el entusiasmo que arrastra a los demás es el que estuvo preparado.

Por eso la Imagen habla de música, que parece decorativa y no lo es. La música es emoción colectiva puesta en forma: ordena el sentimiento de mucha gente en un mismo ritmo, y así lo vuelve utilizable. Los antiguos reyes la usaban para honrar el mérito y para convocar a los antepasados, o sea para dar dirección al fervor. Y el dictamen agrega la consecuencia práctica: cuando el ánimo está así, es el momento de nombrar ayudantes y mover a las tropas. Entusiasmo sin organización se apaga en dos semanas.

The Judgment. Enthusiasm. It is favourable to appoint helpers and set the troops in motion.

The Image. Thunder comes roaring out of the earth: the image of Enthusiasm. Thus the ancient kings made music to honour merit and offered it in splendour to the highest, inviting their ancestors.

Above, Thunder; below, Earth. It is the storm that finally breaks after winter: the same energy that in hexagram 24 lay buried and silent now comes to the surface and can be heard. A single yang line, in the fourth place, with the five yin lines gathering around it. That is how enthusiasm works: it is not a mass that ignites by itself, it is one point that the rest follow.

The character 豫 has two senses and both matter. One is joy, enthusiasm, elation. The other is foresight, preparation, having things ready in advance. In classical Chinese they are the same word, and that coincidence is the whole teaching of the hexagram: the enthusiasm that carries other people is the one that was prepared.

That is why the Image speaks of music, which looks decorative and is not. Music is collective emotion given form: it orders the feeling of many people into one rhythm and thereby makes it usable. The ancient kings used it to honour merit and to summon the ancestors, that is, to give direction to fervour. And the Judgment adds the practical consequence: when spirits are like this, it is the moment to appoint helpers and move the troops. Enthusiasm without organisation burns out in two weeks.

Sacaste el 16 y hay energía. Una idea que te enciende, un proyecto que arranca, un grupo que se prendió, un enamoramiento, unas ganas enormes de hacer algo. El hexagrama confirma que la energía es real y que además es contagiosa: los demás se van a sumar.

El consejo del oráculo no es frenarla. Es esto: convertí el entusiasmo en estructura antes de que se enfríe. Nombrá ayudantes, repartí tareas, poné fechas, armá el equipo. El fervor tiene una vida corta y su única forma de sobrevivir es transformarse en un sistema mientras todavía está caliente.

En lo concreto: si el equipo está entusiasmado, hoy es el día de definir quién hace qué, no la semana que viene. Si querés empezar a entrenar, contratá las clases ahora que tenés ganas, porque el miércoles a las siete de la mañana las ganas no van a estar. Si el proyecto prendió, escribí el plan mientras todos siguen diciendo que sí. El 16 no es un hexagrama de emoción: es un hexagrama de logística de la emoción.

El error típico tiene dos caras que el hexagrama describe en sus dos líneas malas. La primera es el entusiasmo que se anuncia a los gritos —la línea 1—: contarlo antes de hacerlo, gastar en la publicación lo que hacía falta para el trabajo. La segunda es el entusiasmo ciego —la línea 6—: seguir encendido cuando la cosa ya se apagó, sostener la euforia por inercia, no querer ver que la banda se disolvió hace rato. El tercer camino no es la frialdad del que planifica todo ni el fuego del que no planifica nada: es el entusiasmo preparado. La línea 2, firme como una piedra, es el corazón del hexagrama: la persona que no se deja arrastrar por la euforia general y por eso es la única que se da cuenta a tiempo de cuándo hay que moverse.

En lo práctico, el hexagrama 16 suele aparecer cuando:

• Una idea te entusiasma y todavía no hay nada organizado.
• Un grupo se prendió con algo y hay que aprovechar el envión antes de que se enfríe.
• Te toca liderar y necesitás que la gente se sume por ganas y no por obligación.
• Estás sosteniendo un entusiasmo que en el fondo ya se apagó.

You drew 16 and there is energy. An idea that lights you up, a project starting, a group that caught fire, falling in love, an enormous urge to do something. The hexagram confirms the energy is real and that it is contagious as well: other people will join in.

The advice of the oracle is not to slow it down. It is this: turn the enthusiasm into structure before it cools. Appoint helpers, split up the tasks, set dates, build the team. Fervour has a short life and its only way of surviving is to become a system while it is still hot.

Concretely: if the team is excited, today is the day to define who does what, not next week. If you want to start training, book the classes now while you feel like it, because at seven on Wednesday morning the urge will not be there. If the project caught on, write the plan while everyone is still saying yes. Hexagram 16 is not a hexagram of emotion: it is a hexagram of the logistics of emotion.

The typical mistake has two faces, which the hexagram describes in its two bad lines. The first is enthusiasm announced at the top of your voice — line 1: telling it before doing it, spending on the post what the work needed. The second is blind enthusiasm — line 6: staying lit when the thing already went out, keeping the euphoria going out of inertia, refusing to see that the band broke up a long time ago. The third way is neither the coldness of someone who plans everything nor the fire of someone who plans nothing: it is prepared enthusiasm. Line 2, firm as a rock, is the heart of the hexagram: the person who does not get swept along by the general euphoria and is therefore the only one who notices in time when it is the moment to move.

In practice, hexagram 16 tends to come up when:

• An idea excites you and nothing is organised yet.
• A group caught fire about something and the momentum has to be used before it cools.
• It falls to you to lead and you need people to join out of desire, not obligation.
• You are keeping up an enthusiasm that has in truth already gone out.

   The bottom line is connected to power and takes the chance to broadcast it. It is the person who announces the project on day one, who posts the routine before the first week is out, who name-drops an important connection to be noticed. The problem is not the joy: it is spending on the announcement the energy the thing itself needed. Keep it to yourself for a month. What is told too early deflates before it exists.

   La mejor línea del hexagrama y una de las más admiradas del libro. Alguien no se deja arrastrar por la euforia colectiva, se queda firme, mira, y justamente por eso ve antes que nadie cuándo empieza a cambiar la cosa. Y cuando lo ve, no espera un día: actúa. En lo concreto: es el que no compra en la burbuja y tampoco duda cuando llega el momento; el que no se prende a la moda del equipo y después resuelve el problema real. Claridad primero, velocidad después.

   The best line of the hexagram and one of the most admired in the book. Someone does not let themselves be swept along by collective euphoria, stays firm, watches, and precisely for that reason sees before anyone else when things begin to shift. And when they see it, they do not wait a day: they act. Concretely: the person who does not buy into the bubble and does not hesitate when the moment comes; who does not join the team fad and then solves the real problem. Clarity first, speed after.

   Entusiasmo que mira hacia arriba trae arrepentimiento; demorarse también.Enthusiasm that looks upward brings regret; and so does hesitating.

   Estás esperando que otro te encienda: el jefe, el líder del grupo, la persona que te gusta. Mirás para arriba a ver si te toca algo del fuego ajeno. La línea avisa que ese entusiasmo prestado se paga con arrepentimiento, y que dudar demasiado también. En lo concreto: dejá de esperar la señal, la aprobación o el permiso, y hacé tu parte. Si algo te importa de verdad, no necesita que otro lo valide primero para que empieces.

   You are waiting for someone else to light you up: the boss, the leader of the group, the person you like. You look upward to see if some of their fire reaches you. The line warns that borrowed enthusiasm is paid for with regret, and so is hesitating too long. Concretely: stop waiting for the sign, the approval or the permission, and do your part. If something truly matters to you, it does not need somebody else to validate it before you begin.

   De él viene el entusiasmo. Logra cosas grandes. No dudes: los amigos se juntan como el pelo en la hebilla.From him the enthusiasm comes. He achieves great things. Do not doubt: friends gather like hair in a clasp.

   Sos vos el que enciende a los demás. La línea es la única fuerte del hexagrama y le habla al que ocupa ese lugar: tu convicción está organizando al grupo. La instrucción es una sola y es rara en el I Ching: no dudes. La duda del que convoca desarma a todos los que lo siguen. En lo concreto: si armaste el equipo, sostené el rumbo; si te siguen, decí para dónde vamos. La imagen de la hebilla es exacta: sin ese punto, el pelo se dispersa.

   You are the one who lights up the others. This is the only strong line of the hexagram and it speaks to whoever holds that place: your conviction is organising the group. The instruction is one thing and it is rare in the I Ching: do not doubt. Doubt in the person who convenes disarms everyone following them. Concretely: if you built the team, hold the direction; if they follow you, say where we are going. The image of the clasp is exact: without that one point, the hair scatters.

   Enfermo con constancia y sin embargo no muere.Persistently ill and yet he does not die.

   Una línea extraña y muy útil. Describe una presión constante que no te mata: la molestia crónica, el conflicto que nunca estalla, el proyecto que nunca despega del todo pero tampoco se cae. Y el clásico lo lee como una suerte disimulada: eso que te tiene incómodo es justamente lo que no te deja hundirte en la euforia. En lo concreto: la restricción de presupuesto que te obliga a ser preciso, el problema de salud que te ordena la semana. La traba te mantiene vivo.

   A strange and very useful line. It describes a constant pressure that does not kill you: the chronic annoyance, the conflict that never blows up, the project that never quite takes off and never quite falls either. And the classic reads it as disguised luck: the thing keeping you uncomfortable is precisely what stops you sinking into euphoria. Concretely: the budget limit that forces you to be precise, the health problem that organises your week. The obstacle keeps you alive.

   La euforia se volvió ceguera: seguís encendido con algo que ya se apagó, sostenés la fiesta cuando se fueron todos, defendés un proyecto que hace rato dejó de tener sentido. El texto es piadoso y ofrece una salida: si al final cambiás, no hay culpa. Nunca es tarde para darte cuenta. En lo concreto: aceptá que el emprendimiento no funcionó, que la relación se terminó, que ese sueño era de una versión tuya anterior. Reconocerlo hoy borra el error.

   The euphoria turned into blindness: you are still lit up about something that went out, keeping the party going after everyone left, defending a project that stopped making sense long ago. The text is merciful and offers a way out: if you change at the end, there is no fault. It is never too late to see it. Concretely: accept that the venture did not work, that the relationship is over, that the dream belonged to an earlier version of you. Admitting it today erases the mistake.
