El dictamen. La resolución. Hay que denunciar el asunto con firmeza en la corte del rey, y decirlo con verdad. Hay peligro. Hay que avisar primero a la propia ciudad. No conviene tomar las armas. Es propicio emprender algo.

La imagen. El lago subió hasta el cielo: la imagen de la resolución. Así la persona noble reparte sus bienes hacia abajo y evita descansar en su propia virtud.

El 43 tiene cinco líneas fuertes empujando desde abajo y una sola línea débil arriba de todo. Es el tercer mes del calendario: plena primavera, el yang casi completo, lo viejo colgando del borde. La figura es lago sobre cielo, es decir agua acumulada en lo más alto: una nube cargada que ya no puede seguir subiendo. Va a romper. La única pregunta es cómo.

Por eso el Dictamen es un protocolo, no un grito. Denunciar el asunto en la corte del rey significa decirlo en el lugar donde corresponde y ante quien tiene autoridad, no en el pasillo ni por atrás. Decirlo con verdad significa sin exagerar para ganar. Avisar a la propia ciudad significa preparar a los tuyos antes de mover: en una ruptura, los que están cerca también reciben el golpe.

Y está la frase que ordena todo el hexagrama: no conviene tomar las armas. La resolución no se hace por la fuerza, porque el que rompe con violencia se contagia de lo que estaba rompiendo. La Imagen lo completa con dos gestos: repartir hacia abajo, para que la presión acumulada arriba se descargue en algo útil, y no descansar en la propia virtud, que es la trampa favorita del que tiene razón.

The Judgment. Break-through. The matter must be stated firmly at the king's court, and stated truthfully. There is danger. One must first warn one's own city. It does not help to take up arms. It is favourable to undertake something.

The Image. The lake has risen up to heaven: the image of Break-through. Thus the noble person distributes wealth downward and refuses to rest on their own virtue.

Hexagram 43 has five strong lines pushing up from below and a single weak line at the very top. It is the third month of the calendar: full spring, yang almost complete, the old thing hanging off the edge. The figure is lake over heaven — water piled at the highest point: a loaded cloud that cannot climb any further. It is going to break. The only question is how.

That is why the Judgment is a protocol rather than a shout. Stating the matter at the king's court means saying it in the proper place, in front of whoever holds authority, not in the corridor or behind someone's back. Stating it truthfully means without inflating it to win. Warning your own city means preparing the people close to you before you move: in a rupture, they take part of the blow too.

And then the phrase that governs the whole hexagram: it does not help to take up arms. Break-through is not done by force, because whoever breaks violently catches the very thing they were breaking with. The Image completes it with two gestures: distributing downward, so the pressure stored at the top discharges into something useful, and refusing to rest on your own virtue — the favourite trap of the person who happens to be right.

Puede ser una conversación pendiente, una decisión que todos esperan, un vínculo que ya terminó por dentro, una situación en el trabajo que todo el mundo comenta menos el que tiene que hablar. El hexagrama es claro: llegó el momento de decirlo, y la forma importa más que el contenido.

Mirá cómo aparece en la vida diaria. Sabés que tenés que renunciar y venís ensayando el mail hace tres meses. Tenés que decirle a tu socio que su parte no está funcionando. Tenés que poner un límite en tu familia que hace veinte años nadie pone. Tenés que cortar con alguien que no hizo nada terrible, y ese "nada terrible" es justamente lo que te frena. La línea débil de arriba es chica; por eso cuesta tanto: no hay un enemigo, hay una costumbre.

El error típico con el 43 tiene las dos formas del mismo miedo. Una es callar y esperar que se resuelva solo —y el lago sigue subiendo, y cuando rompe rompe mal, en el peor día y con el peor tono—. La otra es tomar las armas: explotar, mandar el mensaje largo a las tres de la mañana, ganar la discusión con datos que guardaste durante meses. Las dos terminan igual, y el hexagrama las descarta a las dos.

El tercer camino es el protocolo. Decilo en el lugar que corresponde, una sola vez, con la verdad justa y sin munición extra. Avisá antes a los que se van a ver afectados. Y ocupate de la parte que la Imagen señala y nadie quiere escuchar: no te instales en tener razón. Si al terminar la conversación estás midiendo cuánto perdió el otro, todavía estabas peleando. La resolución sana no deja ganador; deja aire.

En lo práctico, el hexagrama 43 suele aparecer cuando:

• Tenés una conversación pendiente que venís postergando hace semanas o meses.
• Sabés que algo se terminó y falta decirlo en voz alta.
• Estás por poner un límite que nadie puso antes en ese grupo o en esa familia.
• Acumulaste bronca y sentís que si abrís la boca sale todo junto.

You drew 43 and there is something you are not saying. It might be a pending conversation, a decision everyone is waiting on, a relationship that ended internally, a work situation everybody discusses except the one person who has to speak. The hexagram is clear: the moment to say it has arrived, and how you say it matters more than what you say.

Look at how it shows up day to day. You know you have to resign and you have been rehearsing the email for three months. You have to tell your partner their side is not working. You have to set a boundary in your family that nobody has set in twenty years. You have to end things with someone who did nothing terrible, and that "nothing terrible" is exactly what stops you. The weak line up top is small; that is why it is so hard: there is no enemy, only a habit.

The typical mistake with 43 comes in the two shapes of the same fear. One is staying quiet and hoping it resolves itself — and the lake keeps rising, and when it breaks it breaks badly, on the worst day and in the worst tone. The other is taking up arms: exploding, sending the long message at three in the morning, winning the argument with ammunition you saved up for months. Both end the same way, and the hexagram rules out both.

The third way is the protocol. Say it in the right place, once, with exactly the truth and no extra rounds. Warn the people who will be affected first. And handle the part the Image points at that nobody wants to hear: do not move in to being right. If you finish the conversation measuring how much the other person lost, you were still fighting. A clean break-through leaves no winner; it leaves air.

In practice, hexagram 43 tends to come up when:

• You have a pending conversation you have been putting off for weeks or months.
• You know something is over and it only needs to be said out loud.
• You are about to set a boundary nobody in that group or family has ever set.
• You have stored up anger and you feel that if you open your mouth it all comes out at once.

   Estás en el arranque, con más impulso que posición. La línea no te frena por cobarde: te frena porque todavía no tenés con qué sostener lo que vas a decir. En lo concreto: falta el dato, falta la conversación previa, falta el respaldo de alguien. Antes de dar el paso, preguntate qué pasa si el otro dice que no. Si no tenés respuesta, no es hoy. La prisa acá no acelera nada; solo gasta el primer intento, que es el que más vale.

   You are at the start, with more momentum than position. The line does not hold you back for being timid: it holds you back because you cannot yet support what you are about to say. Concretely: a fact is missing, a preliminary conversation is missing, somebody's backing is missing. Before stepping, ask what happens if the other person says no. If you have no answer, it is not today. Hurry accelerates nothing here; it only spends the first attempt, which is the one worth most.

2. LíneaLine 2 — La alarma en la nocheThe cry of alarm at night

   Un grito de alarma. Armas al atardecer y en la noche. No hay que temer.A cry of alarm. Arms at evening and through the night. There is nothing to fear.

   Alguien te avisa, o tu propio cuerpo te avisa: hay riesgo. La línea dice que estar prevenido alcanza, que no hace falta el pánico ni la ofensiva. En lo concreto: preparate para la reacción que va a venir después de que hables —guardá los mails, contale a alguien de confianza, tené claro el plan B— y después dormí. La diferencia entre esta línea y la anterior es la calma: acá sí estás listo, y por eso justamente no necesitás atacar primero.

   Someone warns you, or your own body does: there is risk. The line says being prepared is enough, that neither panic nor a first strike is needed. Concretely: get ready for the reaction that will follow once you speak — keep the emails, tell someone you trust, know your plan B — and then sleep. The difference between this line and the previous one is calm: here you really are ready, and that is exactly why you do not need to attack first.

   Mostrar fuerza en el rostro trae desgracia. La persona resuelta camina sola, la agarra la lluvia, queda salpicada y otros murmuran. Ningún reproche.Showing strength in the face brings misfortune. The resolute one walks alone, is caught in the rain, ends up spattered, and others mutter. No blame.

   La línea más incómoda y la más honesta. Ya decidiste, pero todavía tenés un pie en el mundo que estás dejando, y eso te obliga a hacerlo solo y a quedar mal parado un tiempo. Te van a criticar, te van a malinterpretar, alguien va a contar tu versión torcida. La línea dice: ningún reproche. En lo concreto: bancá el barro un par de semanas sin salir a explicarte. Mostrar la dureza en la cara es lo único que acá empeora todo.

   The most uncomfortable line and the most honest. You have already decided, but you still have one foot in the world you are leaving, and that forces you to do it alone and to look bad for a while. People will criticise you, misread you, retell your version crooked. The line says: no fault. Concretely: carry the mud for a couple of weeks without going out to explain yourself. Wearing hardness on your face is the one thing that makes this worse.

4. LíneaLine 4 — El que no se deja llevarThe one who will not be led

   No hay piel en los muslos y caminar cuesta. Si se dejara conducir como una oveja, el arrepentimiento se iría; pero aunque se lo digan, no lo va a creer.There is no skin on the thighs and walking is hard. If he let himself be led like a sheep, the regret would go; but if he is told this, he will not believe it.

   Avanzás en carne viva: cada paso duele y aun así seguís empujando. La línea te ofrece la salida —dejarte guiar por alguien que ve mejor que vos— y en la misma frase te avisa que no vas a aceptarla. Es un retrato, no una condena. En lo concreto: si alguien de afuera te viene diciendo lo mismo hace rato y vos tenés siempre una razón para descartarlo, ese es el punto. Probá una semana haciendo lo que te sugieren, sin discutirlo.

   You advance raw: every step hurts and you push anyway. The line offers you the way out — letting someone who sees better than you lead — and in the same breath warns you that you will not take it. It is a portrait, not a sentence. Concretely: if an outsider has been telling you the same thing for a while and you always find a reason to dismiss it, that is the point. Try a week doing what they suggest, without arguing it.

   Con la maleza hace falta una resolución firme. Caminar por el medio deja sin reproche.With weeds a firm resolution is required. Walking the middle keeps one free of blame.

   La maleza es lo que vuelve a crecer: el hábito, el contacto que reaparece, el tema que se reabre cada tres meses. La línea pide firmeza sostenida en vez de un gran gesto único, y pide hacerlo por el medio, sin ensañamiento. En lo concreto: no basta con bloquear una vez, decir que no una vez, tirar el paquete una vez. Lo que corta de verdad es la repetición tranquila de la misma decisión, sin discurso y sin sentirte un héroe por tomarla.

   Weeds are whatever grows back: the habit, the contact that resurfaces, the topic reopened every three months. The line asks for sustained firmness instead of one grand gesture, and asks that it be done down the middle, without cruelty. Concretely: blocking once, saying no once, throwing the packet out once is not enough. What actually cuts is the calm repetition of the same decision, with no speech and no feeling heroic about making it.

   La última línea débil, la que había que resolver, cae sola, y el hexagrama avisa que el silencio la acompaña. Es la advertencia del que creyó que ya estaba todo hecho y bajó la guardia. En lo concreto: después de una ruptura, un despido o un corte, queda un resto que hay que atender —el trámite, la deuda, la conversación con el que quedó en el medio—. Si no avisás, si das por cerrado lo que todavía respira, vuelve por el lado que no mirabas.

   The last weak line, the one that had to be resolved, falls on its own, and the hexagram warns that silence goes with it. It is the warning of someone who assumed it was all done and dropped their guard. Concretely: after a break, a dismissal or a cut-off, a remainder is left to handle — the paperwork, the debt, the conversation with whoever got caught in the middle. If you sound no alarm, if you call closed what is still breathing, it comes back from the side you were not watching.
