El dictamen. El conflicto: tenés razón y encontrás obstrucción. Detenerse con cautela a mitad de camino trae ventura; llevarlo hasta el final trae desgracia. Conviene ver al hombre grande; no conviene cruzar las grandes aguas.

La imagen. El cielo y el agua marchan en direcciones opuestas: la imagen del conflicto. Así el noble, en todo lo que emprende, cuida bien el comienzo.

El 6 pone el cielo arriba y el agua abajo, y la clave está en el movimiento de cada uno: el cielo gira hacia arriba, el agua corre hacia abajo. No se pelean por maldad; se separan porque van a lugares distintos. Esa es la definición más precisa del conflicto que da el libro. No hay villano: hay dos direcciones legítimas que no coinciden.

El hexagrama sigue directamente al 5, la espera, y el orden no es casual: cuando hay algo que todos necesitan, aparece la disputa por quién lo recibe. El nombre chino, Sòng, es el término del pleito, el litigio ante una autoridad. La figura interna también lo dice: abajo el peligro, arriba la fuerza. Alguien se siente amenazado y alguien tiene poder para imponerse.

Por eso el Dictamen es una de las advertencias más claras del I Ching: detenerse a mitad de camino trae ventura y llegar hasta el final trae desgracia. Incluso teniendo razón. Ganar del todo destruye el vínculo del que después vas a depender. Recomienda además ver al hombre grande —un tercero imparcial y con criterio— y desaconseja emprender nada grande mientras dure el pleito.

La Imagen no habla de cómo pelear: habla de cuidar el comienzo. La mayoría de los conflictos se resuelven antes de existir, en la claridad del acuerdo inicial.

The Judgment. Conflict: you are sincere and you meet obstruction. A cautious halt halfway brings good fortune; carrying it through to the end brings misfortune. It furthers to see the great person; it does not further to cross the great water.

The Image. Heaven and water go their opposite ways: the image of Conflict. Thus in everything they undertake, the noble person takes care with the beginning.

Hexagram 6 puts heaven above and water below, and the key is how each one moves: heaven turns upward, water runs downward. They are not fighting out of malice; they separate because they are going to different places. That is the most precise definition of conflict the book gives. There is no villain: there are two legitimate directions that do not coincide.

The hexagram follows directly after 5, Waiting, and the order is not accidental: when there is something everyone needs, a dispute appears over who gets it. The Chinese name, Sòng, is the term for a lawsuit, a case argued before an authority. The inner figure says the same: danger below, strength above. Someone feels threatened and someone has the power to impose.

That is why the Judgment is one of the clearest warnings in the I Ching: stopping halfway brings good fortune and going all the way to the end brings misfortune. Even when you are right. Winning outright destroys the bond you will depend on afterwards. It also recommends seeing the great person — an impartial third party with judgement — and advises against undertaking anything large while the dispute lasts.

The Image does not talk about how to fight: it talks about taking care with the beginning. Most conflicts are resolved before they exist, in the clarity of the original agreement.

Sacaste el 6 y hay una disputa: con un socio, con la familia, con el trabajo, con un vecino, con una empresa que no responde. Lo primero que el hexagrama reconoce es algo que casi nadie te dice: probablemente tengas razón. El Dictamen empieza afirmando que sos sincero y que la obstrucción es real. No te está pidiendo que dudes de vos.

Lo que te pide es otra cosa, y es la más difícil: que separes tener razón de ganar el pleito. Son dos cosas distintas y este hexagrama las trata como opuestas. Detenerse a mitad de camino trae ventura; llegar hasta el final trae desgracia. Traducido a la vida real: aceptá el acuerdo parcial, cobrá el setenta por ciento, tomá la disculpa incompleta, cerrá el tema antes de que te consuma el año.

El error típico del 6 es dejar que el asunto cambie de objetivo. Empezó siendo una diferencia concreta —plata, tiempos, una cláusula— y en algún momento pasó a ser una cuestión de principios, de honor, de que el otro reconozca. Ese cambio es el que arruina todo, porque el reconocimiento no se obtiene por la fuerza y el costo de perseguirlo no tiene techo. El error opuesto es ceder por evitar la incomodidad y quedarse con un resentimiento que sale por otro lado seis meses después.

El tercer camino tiene tres partes concretas. Una: llevá el asunto a un tercero con criterio —un mediador, un abogado, alguien que las dos partes respeten— en vez de escalar solos. Dos: no empieces nada grande mientras esto dure, porque el conflicto se lleva la energía que ese proyecto necesitaría. Tres, y es la que sirve para siempre: revisá el comienzo. Casi todo pleito tiene un acuerdo mal hecho en el origen. Escribí lo que la próxima vez va a estar claro desde el primer día.

En lo práctico, el hexagrama 6 suele aparecer cuando:

• Tenés un desacuerdo con un socio, un cliente, un familiar o una empresa y se está estirando.
• Tenés razón y aun así todo se pone más difícil cuanto más insistís.
• La discusión dejó de ser por el tema concreto y pasó a ser por quién reconoce qué.
• Estás por iniciar un reclamo formal o una demanda.

You drew 6 and there is a dispute: with a partner, with family, at work, with a neighbour, with a company that will not answer. The first thing the hexagram acknowledges is something almost nobody tells you: you are probably right. The Judgment opens by affirming that you are sincere and that the obstruction is real. It is not asking you to doubt yourself.

It is asking for something else, and it is the hardest thing: separate being right from winning the case. They are two different things and this hexagram treats them as opposites. Stopping halfway brings good fortune; going all the way brings misfortune. Translated into real life: take the partial settlement, collect the seventy per cent, accept the incomplete apology, close the matter before it eats your year.

The typical mistake with 6 is letting the matter change its objective. It began as a concrete difference — money, deadlines, a clause — and at some point became a question of principle, of honour, of the other person admitting it. That shift is what ruins everything, because acknowledgement cannot be extracted by force and the cost of chasing it has no ceiling. The opposite mistake is caving to avoid discomfort and keeping a resentment that comes out sideways six months later.

The third way has three concrete parts. One: take the matter to a third party with judgement — a mediator, a lawyer, someone both sides respect — instead of escalating alone. Two: start nothing large while this lasts, because the conflict takes the energy that project would need. Three, and this one lasts forever: review the beginning. Almost every dispute has a badly made agreement at its origin. Write down what will be clear from day one next time.

In practice, hexagram 6 tends to come up when:

• You have a disagreement with a partner, a client, a relative or a company and it is dragging on.
• You are right and everything still gets harder the more you insist.
• The argument stopped being about the concrete issue and became about who admits what.
• You are about to start a formal claim or a lawsuit.

   Si el asunto no se prolonga, habrá un poco de murmullo y al final ventura.If the affair is not prolonged, there is a little gossip and in the end good fortune.

   La mejor línea del hexagrama, y la más barata: todavía estás a tiempo de no entrar. El desacuerdo recién apareció y podés dejarlo pasar sin que te cueste nada más que unos comentarios. El texto es honesto: va a haber algo de murmullo, alguien va a decir que te dejaste pisar. Aguantá eso. Es infinitamente más barato que el pleito completo. En concreto: no contestes ese correo con la respuesta perfecta que ensayaste. Dejalo morir.

   The best line of the hexagram, and the cheapest: you are still in time not to enter. The disagreement has only just appeared and you can let it pass at no cost beyond a few comments. The text is honest: there will be some gossip, someone will say you let yourself be walked over. Bear that. It is infinitely cheaper than the full case. Concretely: do not send that email with the perfect reply you rehearsed. Let it die.

2. LíneaLine 2 — Retirarse a tiempoWithdrawing in time

   No se puede sostener el pleito: se vuelve a casa y se cede. La gente de su pueblo, trescientas familias, queda libre de culpa.The conflict cannot be sustained: one returns home and gives way. The people of the town, three hundred households, stay free of guilt.

   Estás enfrentando a alguien más fuerte y el clásico te dice que te retires sin que eso sea deshonra. El detalle de las trescientas familias es lo importante: no te estás cuidando solo a vos, estás evitando que la pelea arrastre a gente que depende tuya. En la práctica es aceptar que la empresa, el organismo o la persona tienen más músculo, y elegir el terreno donde sí podés. Retirarse a tiempo no es perder: es no pagar una derrota que ya estaba escrita.

   You are facing someone stronger and the classic tells you to withdraw without that being dishonour. The detail of the three hundred households is the important one: you are not only protecting yourself, you are keeping the fight from dragging in people who depend on you. In practice it is accepting that the company, the institution or the person has more muscle, and choosing the ground where you actually can. Withdrawing in time is not losing: it is not paying for a defeat already written.

   No entrás en la disputa: vivís de lo que ya construiste. Es la línea de quien tiene un historial sólido y decide apoyarse en él en vez de salir a demostrar nada. Hay peligro porque alguien puede querer llevarte el crédito, y el consejo es no reclamarlo: hacé bien tu parte dentro de lo que sea que estés sirviendo y no busques la obra que lleve tu nombre. En un ambiente conflictivo, el trabajo consistente vale más que la razón discutida.

   You do not enter the dispute: you live off what you already built. This is the line of someone with a solid record who decides to lean on it instead of going out to prove anything. There is danger because someone may want to take the credit, and the advice is not to claim it: do your part well inside whatever you are serving and do not chase the work that carries your name. In a conflicted environment, consistent work is worth more than an argued point.

4. LíneaLine 4 — Volverse y aceptarTurning back and accepting

   No se puede sostener el pleito: se da la vuelta, se acepta el destino, se cambia de actitud y se encuentra paz en la firmeza. Ventura.The conflict cannot be sustained: one turns back, accepts fate, changes attitude and finds peace in steadiness. Good fortune.

   Tenés fuerza para seguir peleando y decidís no usarla. La línea es de las más maduras del libro porque el cambio no es de estrategia sino de actitud: dejás de necesitar que el otro pierda. Lo que aparece después de esa decisión es paz, y el texto lo llama ventura sin condiciones. En concreto: la carta que no mandás, la conversación en la que no marcás el punto, el descuento que aceptás. Vas a dormir distinto esa misma noche.

   You have the strength to keep fighting and you decide not to use it. This is one of the most mature lines in the book because the change is not of strategy but of attitude: you stop needing the other side to lose. What appears after that decision is peace, and the text calls it good fortune without conditions. Concretely: the letter you do not send, the conversation where you do not score the point, the discount you accept. You will sleep differently that same night.

5. LíneaLine 5 — Llevar el pleito ante el justoBringing the case before the just

   Presentar el pleito ante él trae ventura suprema.To bring the case before him brings supreme good fortune.

   La mejor resolución posible: aparece alguien imparcial y con autoridad real para resolver, y llevar el asunto ahí funciona. Es la línea del mediador, del árbitro, del jefe que sí escucha, del juez que hace bien su trabajo, del amigo que las dos partes respetan. Si te salió esta línea, dejá de negociar de a dos y buscá ese tercero. La condición implícita es que sea alguien verdaderamente neutral: un aliado tuyo disfrazado de árbitro no cumple esta función.

   The best possible resolution: someone impartial with real authority to decide appears, and taking the matter there works. This is the line of the mediator, the arbitrator, the boss who actually listens, the judge who does the job well, the friend both sides respect. If you drew this line, stop negotiating one-on-one and find that third party. The implicit condition is that they be genuinely neutral: an ally of yours dressed as a referee does not fill this role.

   Ganaste el pleito hasta el final y el premio no se sostiene. Es la advertencia central del hexagrama puesta en imagen: conseguiste que te dieran la razón y ahora tenés que defenderla todos los días contra el resentimiento que dejaste atrás. En concreto es el juicio ganado que trae apelaciones, el socio derrotado que boicotea, el familiar que nunca más te habla. Si te salió esta línea, la pregunta ya no es cómo ganar sino cómo reparar algo del vínculo antes de que el costo siga corriendo.

   You won the case all the way and the prize will not hold. It is the hexagram's central warning turned into an image: you got them to admit you were right and now you have to defend it every day against the resentment you left behind. Concretely it is the won lawsuit that brings appeals, the defeated partner who sabotages, the relative who never speaks to you again. If you drew this line, the question is no longer how to win but how to repair some of the bond before the cost keeps running.
