El dictamen. El estancamiento. Los que no son de fiar no favorecen la perseverancia del noble. Lo grande se va y lo pequeño llega.

La imagen. El cielo y la tierra no se unen: la imagen del estancamiento. Así el noble se repliega sobre su valor interior para escapar de las dificultades, y no se deja honrar con cargos ni con paga.

El 12 es el 11 dado vuelta, y esa inversión es todo. Acá el Cielo está arriba y sigue subiendo; la Tierra está abajo y sigue bajando. Cada uno se aleja del otro. No hay pelea, no hay catástrofe: hay dos mitades que dejaron de tocarse. Eso es el estancamiento en el I Ching, y por eso es peor que un conflicto abierto.

En el calendario el hexagrama corresponde al séptimo mes, cuando el yin empieza a crecer y el año se cierra sobre sí mismo. El dictamen agrega un detalle que se suele pasar por alto: en este clima, los que no son de fiar tienen ventaja, y al que quiere hacer las cosas bien le va a costar el doble.

De ahí la instrucción de la Imagen, que es sorprendentemente concreta: replegarse sobre el valor interior, ahorrar en vez de gastar, y no aceptar honores ni cargos. No es cinismo ni resignación. Es una advertencia sobre el precio de la visibilidad en una época mala: aceptar el puesto brillante que te ofrecen ahora es quedar atado a algo que se está hundiendo. El clásico dice, en resumen, que en el estancamiento lo que hay que salvar no es la posición sino la integridad.

The Judgment. Standstill. Those who are not to be trusted do not further the perseverance of the noble. The great departs and the small arrives.

The Image. Heaven and earth do not unite: the image of Standstill. Thus the noble falls back on inner worth to escape the difficulties, and does not let himself be honoured with office or salary.

Hexagram 12 is 11 turned over, and that inversion is everything. Here Heaven is above and keeps rising; Earth is below and keeps sinking. Each one moves away from the other. There is no fight, no catastrophe: there are two halves that stopped touching. That is standstill in the I Ching, and it is why this is worse than open conflict.

In the calendar the hexagram belongs to the seventh month, when yin begins to grow and the year closes in on itself. The Judgment adds a detail that often gets skipped: in this climate, those who are not to be trusted have the advantage, and anyone who wants to do things properly will pay double.

Hence the instruction of the Image, which is surprisingly concrete: fall back on inner worth, economise instead of spending, and accept neither honours nor office. That is not cynicism or resignation. It is a warning about the price of visibility in a bad season: taking the shiny post being offered now means being tied to something that is sinking. The classic says, in short, that in a standstill what has to be saved is not the position but the integrity.

La empresa dice una cosa y hace otra. No es que estén en guerra: es que las partes dejaron de tocarse y todavía fingen que la maquinaria funciona.

El oráculo es honesto y molesto: este no es un momento para lograr, es un momento para conservar. Insistir ahora gasta lo poco que te queda y encima te expone. Lo que se puede hacer es replegarse: bajar los gastos, bajar la exposición, no firmar, no pelear públicamente, no aceptar el ascenso envenenado, no discutir con quien no está dispuesto a escuchar.

En lo concreto: si el trabajo está bloqueado, no renuncies con un portazo ni te pelees con todos; ordená tus papeles, guardá plata y empezá a mirar afuera en silencio. Si la relación está muda, no fuerces la conversación de las tres de la mañana; sostené lo básico y dejá de alimentar la discusión. Si el proyecto no arranca, guardalo entero en vez de destrozarlo.

El error típico con el 12 es querer romper el bloqueo a golpes: la reunión definitiva, el ultimátum, el mensaje larguísimo, la denuncia pública. Nada de eso destraba nada en este clima; solo te deja sin reservas y con la reputación colgada. El otro error, menos ruidoso, es hundirse con el barco por lealtad o por costumbre. El tercer camino es más frío y más eficaz: hacerte chico a propósito, guardar el hilo con las pocas personas que sí son de fiar, y esperar sin venderte. La línea 5 promete que el estancamiento cede, pero le cede al que llegó entero.

En lo práctico, el hexagrama 12 suele aparecer cuando:

• Mandás mensajes, propuestas o pedidos y no hay respuesta de ningún lado.
• En el trabajo se habla mucho y no se decide nada, y el que más ruido hace es el que menos aporta.
• Una relación entró en silencio y las conversaciones ya no llegan a ningún lado.
• Te ofrecen un lugar visible justo cuando todo está por hundirse.

You drew 12 and you probably knew already: there is no dialogue. You send the message and nobody answers. You submit the proposal and it disappears into a drawer. You talk to your partner and you are speaking two different languages. The company says one thing and does another. It is not that anyone is at war: the parts stopped touching and still pretend the machinery works.

The oracle is honest and unwelcome: this is not a moment to achieve, it is a moment to preserve. Insisting now spends the little you have left and exposes you on top of that. What can be done is to pull back: cut costs, cut exposure, do not sign, do not fight in public, do not take the poisoned promotion, do not argue with someone who is not willing to listen.

Concretely: if work is blocked, do not quit by slamming the door or pick fights with everyone; get your paperwork in order, save money and start looking outside quietly. If the relationship has gone mute, do not force the 3 a.m. conversation; hold the basics and stop feeding the argument. If the project will not start, store it whole instead of tearing it apart.

The typical mistake with 12 is trying to break the blockage by force: the definitive meeting, the ultimatum, the enormous message, the public complaint. None of that unblocks anything in this climate; it only leaves you with no reserves and your reputation hanging. The other mistake, quieter, is sinking with the ship out of loyalty or habit. The third way is colder and more effective: make yourself small on purpose, keep the thread with the few people who are actually trustworthy, and wait without selling yourself. Line 5 promises the standstill gives way, but it gives way to whoever arrived intact.

In practice, hexagram 12 tends to come up when:

• You send messages, proposals or requests and nothing comes back from anywhere.
• At work there is a lot of talk and no decisions, and the loudest person contributes the least.
• A relationship has gone silent and conversations no longer arrive anywhere.
• You are offered a visible position exactly when everything is about to sink.

   Al arrancar el pasto vienen las raíces enlazadas: cada uno según su especie. Perseverar trae fortuna y éxito.When you pull the grass, the linked roots come with it: each according to its kind. Persevering brings good fortune and success.

   La misma imagen que abre el hexagrama 11, pero al revés: acá lo que se mueve en grupo es la retirada. Te vas y se van con vos los que piensan parecido. La línea dice que en el arranque del mal tiempo todavía se puede salir limpio y acompañado. En lo concreto: es renunciar antes del despido, es salir del proyecto antes de que se pudra, es dejar el grupo entero en vez de quedarte a discutir. Irse temprano no es abandonar.

   The same image that opens hexagram 11, but reversed: here what moves as a group is the retreat. You leave and the people who think like you leave with you. The line says that at the start of bad weather you can still get out clean and with company. Concretely: it is resigning before the layoff, leaving the project before it rots, walking out of the whole group instead of staying to argue. Leaving early is not abandoning.

2. LíneaLine 2 — Soportar y complacerEnduring and pleasing

   Soportan y adulan: fortuna para los pequeños. Para el grande, el estancamiento mismo es el camino del éxito.They endure and flatter: good fortune for the small. For the great, the standstill itself is the road to success.

   Alrededor tuyo la gente aguanta y adula, y le funciona. A vos no te va a funcionar. La línea marca la diferencia entre sobrevivir agachando la cabeza y sostener un criterio: los dos caminos existen y no dan el mismo resultado. Si elegís el segundo, el estancamiento te va a doler más ahora y te va a salvar después. En lo concreto: no aplaudas lo que no creés, no firmes lo que no leíste, no sonrías en la reunión donde se está decidiendo una barbaridad.

   Around you people put up and flatter, and it works for them. It will not work for you. The line marks the difference between surviving with your head down and holding a standard: both roads exist and they do not lead to the same place. If you take the second one, the standstill will hurt more now and save you later. Concretely: do not applaud what you do not believe, do not sign what you did not read, do not smile in the meeting where something outrageous is being decided.

   Cargan con su propia vergüenza.They carry their own shame.

   La línea más corta del hexagrama y la más incómoda. Alguien que empujó de más empieza a darse cuenta de lo que hizo, y todavía no lo dice. Es el momento previo a admitir el error: la vergüenza ya está adentro. Si te salió esta línea y el que se pasó fuiste vos, el consejo es no esperar a que te descubran. Y si el que se pasó fue otro, no lo humilles: alguien que ya siente vergüenza está a un paso de corregir, y la burla lo empuja para el otro lado.

   The shortest line of the hexagram and the most uncomfortable. Someone who pushed too far is starting to realise what they did, and has not said it yet. It is the moment right before admitting the mistake: the shame is already inside. If you drew this line and the one who overstepped was you, the advice is not to wait until you are found out. And if it was someone else, do not humiliate them: a person who already feels shame is one step from correcting it, and mockery pushes them the other way.

4. LíneaLine 4 — Actuar por mandatoActing on a mandate

   Quien actúa por mandato de lo más alto queda sin culpa; los de igual ánimo comparten la bendición.Whoever acts on a mandate from the highest remains without blame; those of like mind share in the blessing.

   Acá empieza a moverse algo. Alguien con autoridad decide que hay que salir del pozo y vos podés ser parte. La condición que pone la línea es que la iniciativa no nazca de tu ambición personal sino de algo más grande: el bien del equipo, un mandato claro, una necesidad real. Cuando la motivación es esa, los demás se suman solos y la bendición se reparte. En lo concreto: si te toca liderar la salida, dejá bien claro para qué, y no para quién.

   Here something starts to move. Someone with authority decides it is time to get out of the hole and you can be part of it. The condition the line sets is that the initiative must not come from your personal ambition but from something larger: the good of the team, a clear mandate, a real need. When the motive is that, others join by themselves and the blessing gets shared. Concretely: if it falls to you to lead the way out, make it very clear what it is for, not who it is for.

   La mejor línea del 12. El bloqueo empieza a aflojar y aparece la tentación de festejar. El texto hace lo contrario: repite dos veces la pregunta del que teme la recaída y ata todo a un retoño de morera, una raíz que agarra fuerte. Es decir: salí, pero asegurá cada paso. En lo concreto, es la recuperación que se cuida, el vínculo que se reconstruye despacio, el negocio que vuelve a facturar y esta vez guarda reserva. Precaución no es desconfianza: es lo que hace que la salida dure.

   The best line of 12. The blockage begins to loosen and the temptation to celebrate appears. The text does the opposite: it repeats twice the question of someone who fears a relapse and ties everything to a mulberry shoot, a root that grips hard. Meaning: get out, but secure every step. Concretely, it is the recovery that is looked after, the bond rebuilt slowly, the business that bills again and this time keeps a reserve. Caution is not distrust: it is what makes the way out last.

   Se terminó. La línea de arriba de todo es la que da vuelta la situación, y el texto es explícito en el orden: primero el bloqueo, después la alegría. No hay salto mágico ni recompensa que caiga del cielo: hay alguien que aguantó y que ahora empuja la última piedra. En lo concreto, es la respuesta que por fin llega, el trámite que se destraba, la conversación que después de meses se puede tener. Festejalo. Y acordate de quién estuvo cuando no había nada.

   It is over. The top line is the one that turns the situation around, and the text is explicit about the order: first the blockage, then the joy. There is no magic leap and no reward falling from the sky: there is someone who held on and now pushes the last stone. Concretely, it is the answer that finally arrives, the procedure that unblocks, the conversation that after months can be had. Celebrate it. And remember who was there when there was nothing.
