El dictamen. El ejército necesita perseverancia y un conductor con experiencia. Ventura, sin falla.

La imagen. En medio de la tierra hay agua: la imagen del ejército. Así el noble acrecienta sus multitudes siendo generoso con la gente.

El 7 tiene la tierra arriba y el agua abajo: una napa escondida bajo el campo. A simple vista no hay nada; abajo hay una masa enorme reunida y disponible. Esa es la imagen del ejército en el I Ching, y no habla tanto de guerra como de organización: una fuerza dispersa que alguien logró juntar y dirigir.

La figura tiene una sola línea entera, en el segundo lugar, rodeada de cinco líneas partidas. Es el retrato exacto de un conductor entre la tropa: uno solo con la decisión, muchos que la ejecutan. La tradición subraya que esa línea está abajo y en el centro, no en la cima: quien manda de verdad está adentro del grupo, no mirándolo desde arriba.

El Dictamen pide dos cosas y no negocia ninguna. Perseverancia, porque una empresa colectiva se sostiene en el tiempo o no se sostiene. Y un conductor con experiencia, literalmente alguien mayor y probado: en un esfuerzo así, la buena voluntad no reemplaza al oficio.

La Imagen es la parte que suele saltearse y es la que explica el resto. El agua está dentro de la tierra: la fuerza sale del pueblo y vuelve al pueblo. Por eso el noble acrecienta sus multitudes siendo generoso. No se manda por miedo. Se manda porque la gente que te sigue está mejor con vos que sin vos.

The Judgment. The Army needs perseverance and a leader with experience. Good fortune, without blame.

The Image. In the middle of the earth there is water: the image of the Army. Thus the noble person increases their multitudes by being generous with the people.

Hexagram 7 has earth above and water below: a water table hidden under the field. On the surface there is nothing; underneath there is an enormous mass gathered and available. That is the image of the army in the I Ching, and it speaks less about war than about organisation: a scattered force someone managed to gather and direct.

The figure has a single unbroken line, in the second place, surrounded by five broken ones. It is the exact portrait of a leader among the troops: one with the decision, many who carry it out. Tradition stresses that this line sits low and central, not at the summit: whoever truly commands is inside the group, not watching it from above.

The Judgment asks two things and negotiates neither. Perseverance, because a collective undertaking either holds over time or does not hold. And a leader with experience, literally someone older and tested: in an effort like this, goodwill does not replace craft.

The Image is the part usually skipped and it explains the rest. The water is inside the earth: the force comes from the people and returns to the people. That is why the noble person increases their multitudes through generosity. You do not command by fear. You command because the people following you are better off with you than without you.

Sacaste el 7 y hay algo que ya no podés hacer solo. Un proyecto que creció, un equipo que armar, una mudanza, una obra, una enfermedad en la familia, una empresa que necesita estructura. El hexagrama no discute si la tarea es posible: da por hecho que la fuerza está. Lo que discute es si está organizada.

La respuesta del 7 es incómoda para cualquiera al que le cueste mandar: hace falta que alguien conduzca, con nombre y apellido, y ese alguien tiene que saber. No un comité, no la buena onda del grupo, no la esperanza de que todos se coordinen solos. Una persona que decide y de la que se espera que decida. Si esa persona sos vos, asumilo explícitamente. Si no lo sos, decí quién es y seguila.

El error típico del 7 es la falta de orden en el primer paso, y la línea 1 lo dice sin vueltas. Arrancar sin roles claros, sin fecha, sin criterio de éxito, con la idea de ir viendo. En un esfuerzo colectivo eso no se corrige después: se paga con confusión, retrabajo y gente que se retira sin avisar.

El error opuesto es igual de caro: convertir la conducción en autoritarismo. El hexagrama lo bloquea desde la Imagen. La única razón por la que la napa sostiene al campo es que está adentro. Un jefe que castiga, que no explica y que se queda con el mérito puede juntar gente una vez, no dos.

El tercer camino del 7 es organizar sin dejar de ser generoso. Poné una estructura clara desde el primer día, elegí un conductor con experiencia real, dale a cada uno una tarea que pueda cumplir, y repartí bien lo que se gane. Disciplina hacia la tarea y generosidad hacia las personas. Esa combinación es la que convierte un grupo en una fuerza.

En lo práctico, el hexagrama 7 suele aparecer cuando:

• Tenés que armar o conducir un equipo y no sabés si te corresponde el lugar.
• Un proyecto creció y ya no se sostiene con la organización que tenía.
• Hay un esfuerzo colectivo en la familia o el trabajo que nadie está coordinando.
• Estás por empezar algo largo que va a exigir disciplina durante meses.

You drew 7 and there is something you can no longer do alone. A project that grew, a team to build, a move, a construction, an illness in the family, a company that needs structure. The hexagram does not argue about whether the task is possible: it takes for granted that the force is there. What it argues about is whether it is organised.

The answer of hexagram 7 is uncomfortable for anyone who finds it hard to lead: someone has to be in command, with a first and last name, and that someone has to know what they are doing. Not a committee, not the group's good vibes, not the hope that everyone will coordinate themselves. One person who decides and who is expected to decide. If that person is you, take it on explicitly. If it is not, say who it is and follow them.

The typical mistake with 7 is disorder in the first step, and line 1 says so bluntly. Starting without clear roles, without a date, without a definition of success, with the idea of figuring it out as you go. In a collective effort that does not get corrected later: it is paid for in confusion, rework, and people who quietly withdraw.

The opposite mistake is just as expensive: turning leadership into authoritarianism. The hexagram blocks that from the Image onward. The only reason the water table sustains the field is that it is inside it. A boss who punishes, does not explain and keeps the credit can gather people once, not twice.

The third way of hexagram 7 is to organise without ceasing to be generous. Put a clear structure in place from day one, choose a leader with real experience, give each person a task they can actually complete, and share out well whatever is earned. Discipline toward the task and generosity toward the people. That combination is what turns a group into a force.

In practice, hexagram 7 tends to come up when:

• You have to build or lead a team and do not know whether the role is yours.
• A project grew and no longer holds with the organisation it had.
• There is a collective effort at home or at work that nobody is coordinating.
• You are about to start something long that will demand discipline for months.

   El ejército debe salir en orden. Si el orden no es bueno, amenaza la desgracia.The army must set out in proper order. If the order is not good, misfortune threatens.

   Todo se juega en el primer paso. Antes de arrancar tiene que estar claro quién hace qué, hasta cuándo y con qué recursos. Suena burocrático y es exactamente lo contrario: es lo que después permite improvisar sin romper nada. En la práctica, media hora de definir roles al principio ahorra semanas de confusión. Si te salió esta línea, frená el arranque un día y escribí la estructura. Nada de lo que sigue se arregla sin esto.

   Everything is decided in the first step. Before setting out it has to be clear who does what, by when, and with what resources. It sounds bureaucratic and it is exactly the opposite: it is what later allows improvisation without breaking anything. In practice, half an hour spent defining roles at the start saves weeks of confusion. If you drew this line, hold the start for a day and write the structure down. Nothing that follows can be fixed without it.

   En medio del ejército. Ventura, sin falla. El rey concede una triple distinción.In the midst of the army. Good fortune, no fault. The king bestows a triple honour.

   La mejor línea del hexagrama: el que conduce está adentro, no arriba. Comparte las condiciones, escucha, se ensucia las manos, y por eso lo siguen. La triple distinción indica que ese liderazgo termina siendo reconocido, aunque no lo haya buscado. Si estás en esta posición, quedate cerca de la tarea real y de la gente que la hace. La autoridad que se gana así no necesita imponerse: cuando pedís algo, ya está hecho.

   The best line of the hexagram: the one who leads is inside, not above. They share the conditions, they listen, they get their hands dirty, and that is why people follow. The triple honour indicates that such leadership ends up recognised, even though it was never sought. If you are in this position, stay close to the real work and to the people doing it. Authority earned this way does not need to impose itself: when you ask for something, it is already done.

3. LíneaLine 3 — El carro con cadáveresCorpses in the wagon

   Puede que el ejército lleve cadáveres en el carro. Desgracia.Perhaps the army carries corpses in the wagon. Misfortune.

   La conducción se repartió entre varios y el resultado es una derrota. Es la línea de las decisiones por consenso forzado, de las dos personas que mandan lo mismo con criterios distintos, del equipo que arrastra tareas muertas porque nadie se anima a cancelarlas. El carro con cadáveres es una imagen brutal de eso: la estructura sigue moviéndose y ya no lleva nada vivo. Si te salió esta línea, hay que nombrar un responsable único y dar de baja lo que ya no va.

   Leadership got split among several and the result is defeat. This is the line of forced consensus decisions, of two people commanding the same thing with different criteria, of the team dragging dead tasks along because nobody dares cancel them. The wagon of corpses is a brutal image for that: the structure keeps moving and no longer carries anything alive. If you drew this line, name a single person responsible and shut down what is no longer going anywhere.

   Retroceder ordenadamente y sin culpa. La línea reconoce algo que casi ninguna cultura de trabajo acepta: a veces la mejor decisión es no dar la batalla. No es rendirse, es replegarse a una posición sostenible para conservar la fuerza. En concreto es posponer el lanzamiento, achicar el alcance del proyecto, aceptar que este trimestre no era. Hacerlo a tiempo y de manera ordenada te deja intacto para el intento siguiente.

   Pulling back in an orderly way and without blame. The line acknowledges something almost no work culture accepts: sometimes the best decision is not to give battle. It is not surrender, it is falling back to a sustainable position to preserve strength. Concretely it is postponing the launch, shrinking the scope, accepting that this quarter was not the one. Doing it in time and in order leaves you intact for the next attempt.

5. LíneaLine 5 — La caza en el campoGame in the field

   Hay caza en el campo: conviene atraparla, sin falla. Que el mayor conduzca el ejército; si el menor transporta cadáveres, la perseverancia trae desgracia.There is game in the field: it furthers to catch it, without blame. Let the eldest lead the army; if the younger hauls the corpses, perseverance brings misfortune.

   Apareció un motivo legítimo para actuar: la caza entró en tu campo, o sea que la situación te obliga y no estás buscando pelea. Está bien responder. La condición es quién conduce: alguien con experiencia probada, no el que tiene más entusiasmo ni el que está más disponible. Es la línea que más se desobedece en las organizaciones. Poner a la persona equivocada al frente de algo grande convierte una acción justificada en un desastre lento.

   A legitimate reason to act has appeared: the game came into your field, meaning the situation compels you and you are not looking for a fight. Responding is right. The condition is who leads: someone with tested experience, not whoever is most enthusiastic or most available. This is the most disobeyed line in organisations. Putting the wrong person in front of something large turns a justified action into a slow disaster.

6. LíneaLine 6 (arriba de todothe top line) — El reparto después de la victoriaSharing out after the victory

   El gran príncipe imparte órdenes, funda estados y otorga feudos a las familias. No conviene emplear a los mezquinos.The great prince issues commands, founds states and grants fiefs to families. It does not further to employ the small-minded.

   Terminó el esfuerzo y llega la parte que define si el grupo vuelve a juntarse: el reparto. La línea prescribe reconocer a cada uno según lo que hizo, con hechos y no con discursos. Y agrega una advertencia dura: hay gente que sirvió para el empuje y no sirve para el después. Al que solo sabe pelear no le des un puesto de gestión. En concreto: pagá lo que corresponde, nombrá los aportes en voz alta y elegí con cuidado a quién le dejás la etapa siguiente.

   The effort is over and the part that decides whether the group ever gathers again arrives: the sharing out. The line prescribes recognising each person for what they did, in facts rather than speeches. And it adds a hard warning: some people were useful for the push and are not useful for what comes after. Do not give a management role to someone who only knows how to fight. Concretely: pay what is owed, name the contributions out loud, and choose carefully who gets the next stage.
