El dictamen. Lo abismal repetido. Si sos veraz, tenés éxito en el corazón, y lo que hagas sale adelante.

La imagen. El agua fluye sin interrupción y llega a destino: la imagen del abismo repetido. Así el noble sostiene su conducta y no interrumpe la tarea de enseñar.

El 29 es uno de los ocho hexagramas dobles: el mismo trigrama arriba y abajo. El trigrama es kǎn, el agua, y su figura es una línea entera encerrada entre dos partidas, es decir, algo firme atrapado en un hueco. Repetido dos veces da un peligro que no termina cuando salís del primero, porque atrás hay otro igual.

El nombre chino significa a la vez pozo, hoyo y despeñadero. La tradición lo llama la imagen del corazón: en el peor lugar posible, lo único sólido está adentro. Por eso el Dictamen no promete que salgas, promete que si sos veraz tenés éxito en el corazón. Primero la firmeza interna, después el movimiento.

Y por eso la Imagen elige el agua como maestra. El agua nunca discute con el desnivel: cae, llena el hueco, sigue, y así llega a destino sin saltearse un paso. No se detiene ni se apura, y sobre todo no cambia de naturaleza por estar en un pozo. De ahí la prescripción rara del hexagrama más oscuro del libro: repetir la conducta y enseñar. Lo que sostiene en el abismo es lo que ya hacías antes de caer.

The Judgment. The abysmal repeated. If you are truthful, you have success in the heart, and whatever you do carries through.

The Image. Water flows on without interruption and reaches its goal: the image of the abysmal repeated. Thus the noble one sustains their conduct and does not interrupt the work of teaching.

29 is one of the eight doubled hexagrams: the same trigram above and below. The trigram is kan, water, and its figure is a solid line shut between two broken ones, something firm caught in a hollow. Doubled, it gives a danger that does not end when you get out of the first one, because another identical one waits behind it.

The Chinese name means pit, hole and ravine at once. Tradition calls it the image of the heart: in the worst possible place, the only solid thing is inside. That is why the Judgment does not promise that you get out, it promises that if you are truthful you have success in the heart. Inner firmness first, movement afterwards.

And that is why the Image chooses water as the teacher. Water never argues with a drop: it falls, fills the hollow, moves on, and so it reaches its goal without skipping a step. It neither stops nor hurries, and above all it does not change its nature for being in a pit. Hence the odd prescription of the darkest hexagram in the book: repeat your conduct and teach. What holds you in the abyss is what you were already doing before you fell.

El hexagrama no te va a endulzar la situación. Lo que hace es algo más útil: te dice cómo se atraviesa.

En el abismo no se sale de un salto, se sale como sale el agua: llenando un hueco por vez, sin apurarse y sin cambiar de forma. El agua nunca intenta el atajo, y por eso llega.

En lo concreto: pagar la cuota chica todos los meses en vez de esperar el golpe de suerte que borre la deuda, hacer la sesión, tomar el remedio, cumplir el horario, contestar el mail de hoy. El 29 es el hexagrama de los procedimientos aburridos, y en el peligro los procedimientos aburridos son exactamente lo que salva. La línea 4 lo dice con una imagen mínima: en la crisis alcanza con una jarra de vino y un cuenco de arroz entregados por la ventana. Nada de ceremonias, lo indispensable, y sirve.

El error típico son las dos maneras de negarse al agua. Una es el salto: la apuesta grande, el préstamo que tapa todo, la escena que resuelve la relación de una vez, la renuncia impulsiva. La línea 1 muestra dónde termina el que se lanza, en un pozo dentro del pozo. La otra es quedarse quieto y familiarizarse con el fondo hasta que el pozo se vuelve casa; ese es el destino de la línea 6, tres años sin encontrar la salida. El tercer camino es el del agua: movimientos chicos, continuos, repetibles, y ninguna promesa de que sea rápido. Mientras tanto, la única obligación real que te da el hexagrama es no volverte otra persona adentro del pozo.

En lo práctico, el hexagrama 29 suele aparecer cuando:

• Estás en una racha en la que apenas resolvés un problema aparece otro igual.
• Tenés una deuda, un juicio o un tratamiento largo que no se arregla de un movimiento.
• Te tienta una apuesta grande que prometería sacarte de todo de una vez.
• Te acostumbraste a una situación mala y ya no la ves como algo que hay que atravesar.

You drew 29 and you do not need much explaining: you already know which pit you are in. Debts, an illness, a lawsuit, a separation, a stretch where you barely put out one fire before the next one starts. The hexagram will not sweeten the situation. It does something more useful: it tells you how the crossing is done.

You do not leave the abyss in one jump, you leave it the way water does: filling one hollow at a time, without hurrying and without changing shape. Water never attempts the shortcut, and that is why it arrives.

Concretely: paying the small instalment every month instead of waiting for the stroke of luck that wipes the debt, going to the session, taking the medicine, keeping the schedule, answering the email of today. 29 is the hexagram of boring procedures, and in danger boring procedures are exactly what saves you. Line 4 says it with a minimal image: in a crisis a jug of wine and a bowl of rice handed in through the window are enough. No ceremony, only the indispensable, and it works.

The typical mistake is one of the two ways of refusing to be water. The first is the jump: the big bet, the loan that covers everything, the scene that settles the relationship once and for all, the impulsive resignation. Line 1 shows where the one who leaps ends up, in a pit inside the pit. The second is standing still and getting familiar with the bottom until the pit becomes home; that is the fate of line 6, three years without finding the way. The third way is the way of water: small movements, continuous, repeatable, and no promise that it will be fast. Meanwhile, the only real obligation the hexagram gives you is not to become somebody else down in the pit.

In practice, hexagram 29 tends to come up when:

• You are in a stretch where you barely solve one problem before an identical one appears.
• You have a debt, a lawsuit or a long treatment that no single move will fix.
• A big bet is tempting you with the promise of clearing everything at once.
• You have got used to a bad situation and no longer see it as something to cross.

   La línea del que se acostumbró al peligro y por eso ya no lo mide. Cuando el desorden se vuelve normal, cada movimiento apurado hunde un poco más: el préstamo para pagar el préstamo, la mentira para tapar la anterior, la copa que arregla la resaca. No hay reproche moral acá, hay física. Si estás en esta línea, el consejo es dejar de moverte por un rato y mirar dónde estás parado antes de dar el próximo paso.

   The line of someone so used to danger that they no longer measure it. When disorder becomes normal, every hurried move sinks you a little further: the loan to pay the loan, the lie to cover the previous one, the drink that fixes the hangover. There is no moral reproach here, there is physics. If you are on this line, the advice is to stop moving for a while and look at where you are standing before the next step.

   El abismo es peligroso. Conviene aspirar solamente a cosas pequeñas.The abyss is dangerous. It furthers to strive only for small things.

   Es la línea más práctica del hexagrama y la que más gente necesita. No vas a resolver todo este mes, y esa es la buena noticia: bajá el objetivo hasta que sea alcanzable hoy. Pagar una cuota, ordenar un papel, dormir bien una noche, hacer una llamada. Aspirar a poco dentro del peligro no es resignarse, es la única forma de acumular movimientos que no fracasen. El agua tampoco intenta el pozo entero de un saque.

   This is the most practical line of the hexagram and the one most people need. You are not going to solve everything this month, and that is the good news: lower the goal until it is reachable today. Pay one instalment, sort out one document, sleep well for one night, make one call. Aiming small inside danger is not resignation, it is the only way to stack up moves that do not fail. Water does not try the whole pit in one go either.

3. LíneaLine 3 — Abismo sobre abismoAbyss upon abyss

   Adelante y atrás, abismo sobre abismo. Detenerse primero y esperar. No actúes así.Forward and back, abyss upon abyss. Pause first and wait. Do not act like this.

   Estás entre dos peligros y cualquier dirección parece mala. La línea da una instrucción rara para un libro que suele empujar a moverse: quedate quieto. No es pasividad, es reconocer que hay momentos en los que toda acción empeora porque todavía no hay información suficiente. En lo cotidiano: no contestes hoy, no firmes esta semana, no tomes la decisión en el peor momento del día. Esperar acá es trabajo, y es el trabajo correcto.

   You are between two dangers and every direction looks bad. The line gives an odd instruction for a book that usually pushes you to move: stay still. It is not passivity, it is recognising that there are moments when any action makes things worse because there is not enough information yet. Everyday version: do not reply today, do not sign this week, do not make the decision at the worst hour of your day. Waiting here is work, and it is the right work.

   En la crisis se pasa lo indispensable por la abertura que haya, sin protocolo ni vajilla buena. La línea 4 es la más humana del hexagrama: describe el vínculo mínimo que sostiene en el peor momento. Es el amigo que aparece con comida y no pregunta nada, el mensaje corto de todos los días, la reunión de quince minutos que reemplaza al informe. Si estás acá, aceptá la ayuda simple y no la rechaces por vergüenza; en el abismo, la vajilla no importa.

   In a crisis you pass through whatever opening there is only what is indispensable, with no protocol and no good crockery. Line 4 is the most human of the hexagram: it describes the minimal bond that holds in the worst moment. It is the friend who turns up with food and asks nothing, the short daily message, the fifteen-minute meeting that replaces the report. If you are here, accept the simple help and do not refuse it out of embarrassment; in the abyss the crockery does not matter.

   El pozo se llena y el agua se va: el peligro tiene medida y no dura para siempre. Esta línea es el punto de giro del hexagrama y también su límite, porque no promete abundancia, promete pasaje. En lo concreto: apuntá a salir, no a salir ganando. Cerrá la deuda, terminá el tratamiento, resolvé el conflicto, y dejá para más adelante la idea de recuperar todo lo perdido. Llenar hasta el borde alcanza para seguir de largo.

   The pit fills and the water moves on: the danger has a measure and does not last forever. This line is the turning point of the hexagram and also its limit, because it does not promise abundance, it promises passage. Concretely: aim to get out, not to get out ahead. Close the debt, finish the treatment, settle the conflict, and leave the idea of recovering everything lost for later. Filling to the rim is enough to keep going.

   Atado con sogas, encerrado entre muros de espinas: tres años sin encontrar la salida. Desgracia.Bound with cords, shut in between thorn walls: three years without finding the way out. Misfortune.

   La línea de arriba es la del que se quedó tanto tiempo en el pozo que dejó de buscar puerta. Tres años, dice el texto, y en el I Ching un plazo así siempre marca un estado, no una fecha. Es la persona que se acostumbró al trabajo que la enferma, a la relación helada, al gasto que no controla. Si te salió esta línea, la salida existe pero no la vas a ver solo: pedí ayuda de afuera, alguien que no viva adentro del mismo pozo.

   The top line belongs to the one who stayed in the pit so long they stopped looking for a door. Three years, says the text, and in the I Ching a term like that always marks a state rather than a date. It is the person who got used to the job that makes them ill, to the frozen relationship, to the spending they do not control. If this line came up, the way out exists but you will not see it alone: ask for help from outside, from someone who does not live in the same pit.
