El dictamen. La contemplación. La ablución ya fue hecha, pero la ofrenda todavía no. Los demás miran hacia arriba con confianza.

La imagen. El viento recorre la tierra: la imagen de la contemplación. Así los antiguos reyes visitaban las regiones, observaban a la gente e impartían enseñanza.

El 20 pone el viento sobre la tierra: el aire que recorre cada campo y toca todo sin empujar nada. Es la manera en que la tradición imagina la influencia de quien está arriba. No ordena; pasa, y las cosas se acomodan a su paso.

La imagen del Dictamen viene del rito. En la ceremonia antigua había un momento previo a la ofrenda en que el oficiante ya se había lavado las manos y todavía no había puesto nada en el altar. Ese instante suspendido, de máxima atención y mínimo movimiento, es el hexagrama entero. Todavía no pasó nada y ya está todo dicho por la actitud.

El carácter Guān significa a la vez mirar y ser mirado, y el nombre designaba también una torre alta desde la que se veía el país y que el país veía. Por eso el 20 tiene dos caras inseparables: es el hexagrama del que observa antes de decidir y también el del que está siendo observado sin darse cuenta. En el calendario es el octavo mes, con lo blando ya subiendo y sólo dos líneas firmes arriba.

The Judgment. Contemplation. The washing of hands has been done, but the offering has not. Those below look up with trust.

The Image. The wind moves over the earth: the image of Contemplation. Thus the ancient kings visited the regions, observed the people and gave instruction.

Hexagram 20 sets the wind above the earth: air that crosses every field and touches everything without pushing anything. It is how tradition imagines the influence of whoever stands above. It does not command; it passes, and things arrange themselves in its wake.

The image in the Judgment comes from ritual. In the old ceremony there was a moment before the offering when the officiant had already washed his hands and had not yet placed anything on the altar. That suspended instant, of maximum attention and minimum movement, is the whole hexagram. Nothing has happened yet and everything is already said by the bearing.

The character Guān means both to look and to be looked at, and the word also named a tall tower from which the country was seen and which the country could see. That is why 20 has two inseparable faces: it is the hexagram of the one who observes before deciding, and also of the one being observed without noticing. In the calendar it is the eighth month, with the yielding already rising and only two firm lines on top.

Lo que el oráculo pide es una mirada amplia y honesta, incluida la que se dirige a vos mismo. Las dos líneas centrales del hexagrama hablan de eso: contemplar mi propia vida para decidir si avanzo o me retiro. No la vida ideal, no la que contás en la sobremesa: la que efectivamente estás viviendo, medida en horas y en gastos.

En lo concreto, el 20 aparece cuando alguien quiere resolver rápido algo que todavía no entiende: irse de un trabajo sin tener claro qué le molesta exactamente, cortar un vínculo en medio de una semana pésima, poner plata en algo que le explicaron por encima. También aparece del otro lado: cuando el observado sos vos, y tu ejemplo pesa más que tus argumentos. Un padre, un jefe, alguien con gente que lo mira. Ahí la línea 1 es una advertencia: mirar como un chico, desde afuera y sin profundidad, se le perdona a cualquiera menos al que tiene responsabilidad.

El error típico es la mirada por la rendija: te asomás apenas, ves un pedacito y decidís como si hubieras visto todo. El error opuesto es contemplar para siempre y llamarle prudencia a la parálisis.

El tercer camino es el del viento: recorrer todo antes de opinar, y después influir por lo que sos y no por lo que decís. Cuando termines de mirar de verdad, vas a descubrir que la decisión ya está hecha sola.

En lo práctico, el hexagrama 20 suele aparecer cuando:

• Cuando tu ejemplo pesa más que tus palabras: crianza, equipo, docencia.
• Cuando estás viendo sólo un pedazo de la situación y decidís como si fuera el todo.

You drew 20 and the answer is uncomfortable for anyone who wanted an instruction: for now, look. It is not passivity or cowardice; it is that the information you are missing cannot be got by acting. The wind crosses the whole earth before anyone decides anything.

What the oracle asks for is a wide, honest look, including the one aimed at yourself. The two central lines of the hexagram say exactly that: contemplating my own life to decide whether to advance or withdraw. Not the ideal life, not the one you narrate over dinner: the one you are actually living, measured in hours and in spending.

Concretely, 20 shows up when someone wants to settle quickly something they do not yet understand: leaving a job without being clear what exactly bothers them, cutting off a relationship in the middle of a terrible week, putting money into something explained to them in passing. It also shows up from the other side: when you are the one observed, and your example weighs more than your arguments. A parent, a boss, anyone with people watching. There, line 1 is a warning: looking like a child, from outside and without depth, is forgiven in anyone except the person who carries responsibility.

The typical mistake is the look through the crack: you peek, see a fragment, and decide as if you had seen it all. The opposite mistake is contemplating forever and calling paralysis prudence.

The third way is the way of the wind: cross everything before you give an opinion, then influence by what you are rather than by what you say. When you finish really looking, you will find the decision has already made itself.

In practice, hexagram 20 tends to come up when:

• When you have to assess someone, or someone is assessing you.
• When your example weighs more than your words: parenting, a team, teaching.
• When you are seeing only a fragment of the situation and deciding as if it were the whole.

   Mirás desde afuera y desde lejos, como quien pasa por la puerta de un taller y cree que entendió el oficio. Para el que no tiene nada a cargo es apenas ignorancia. Para el que decide sobre otros es un problema serio: opinás del área que no visitaste, evaluás a alguien por dos minutos de reunión, juzgás una familia por una escena. Si tenés responsabilidad, esta línea te manda a entrar y quedarte el tiempo suficiente.

   You look from outside and from far away, like someone passing a workshop door who thinks he has grasped the trade. In a person with nothing at stake it is mere ignorance. In a person who decides about others it is a serious problem: you opine on the department you never visited, judge someone on two minutes of a meeting, judge a family on one scene. If you carry responsibility, this line orders you to go in and stay long enough.

   Ves una parte, y esa parte es cierta. El problema aparece cuando la tomás por el todo. Es la línea del que juzga una relación por lo que muestra en público, o una empresa por lo que se comenta en el pasillo. Sirve para lo propio y para lo cercano; no alcanza para decidir sobre lo grande. Antes de sacar conclusiones, preguntate cuánto de lo que creés saber lo viste con tus ojos y cuánto te lo contaron.

   You see a part, and that part is true. The problem starts when you take it for the whole. It is the line of the person who judges a relationship by what it shows in public, or a company by corridor gossip. It works for your own affairs and for what is near; it is not enough to decide about anything large. Before drawing conclusions, ask yourself how much of what you believe you know you saw with your own eyes and how much you were told.

   La línea más útil del hexagrama y la más difícil de hacer con honestidad. No mirás la situación: mirás el efecto que la situación tiene sobre vos. Cómo dormís, con qué cara llegás, en qué se te va el dinero, a quién dejaste de llamar. Ese examen decide solo, sin necesidad de armar una lista de pros y contras. Si estás acá, tomate un día entero sin opinión de nadie y mirá los últimos seis meses tal como fueron.

   The most useful line of the hexagram and the hardest to do honestly. You do not look at the situation: you look at the effect the situation has on you. How you sleep, what face you arrive with, where your money goes, who you stopped calling. That examination decides on its own, with no need for a list of pros and cons. If you are here, take a whole day free of anyone else opinion and look at the last six months exactly as they were.

   Estás cerca de algo que funciona bien y podés aprenderlo desde adentro. Un equipo que trabaja como te gustaría trabajar, una casa donde se convive bien, un oficio hecho por alguien que sabe. La línea aconseja entrar como huésped: no llegues a competir ni a corregir, llegá a ver cómo lo hacen. Es una posición temporal y muy fértil. Aprovechala mientras dure y llevate el método, no la anécdota.

   You are near something that works well and you can learn it from inside. A team that works the way you would like to work, a household where people live together well, a craft done by someone who knows. The line advises entering as a guest: do not arrive to compete or to correct, arrive to see how they do it. It is a temporary and very fertile position. Use it while it lasts and take away the method, not the anecdote.

   The same as line 3, but with people watching. Here the personal examination is not private: what you do will be copied. A boss reviewing how he treats his team, a parent reviewing what habit he is teaching without meaning to. The right way to look at yourself in this position is through effects: do not ask whether your intentions are good, look at how the people who depend on you are doing. That is the whole report.

   La mirada del que ya salió: no tiene cargo, no tiene interés, no tiene nada que ganar. Desde ahí se ve todo con una claridad que adentro es imposible. Puede ser un retiro real o un rato de distancia deliberada. La línea no te pide que te vayas de tu vida: te pide que la mires una vez sin defenderla. Lo que quede en pie después de esa mirada es exactamente lo que vale la pena sostener.

   The gaze of the one who has already left: no post, no interest, nothing to gain. From there everything is seen with a clarity that is impossible from inside. It can be a real retreat or a stretch of deliberate distance. The line does not ask you to leave your life: it asks you to look at it once without defending it. Whatever is still standing after that look is exactly what is worth holding on to.
