El dictamen. La solidaridad trae ventura. Consultá una vez más: si hay grandeza, constancia y perseverancia, no hay falla. Los que dudan se van acercando de a poco; el que llega tarde encuentra desgracia.

La imagen. Sobre la tierra está el agua: la imagen de la solidaridad. Así los reyes antiguos repartían los territorios y cultivaban trato amistoso con los príncipes.

El 8 es el reflejo exacto del 7: la misma tierra y la misma agua, pero ahora el agua está arriba. Ya no es una napa escondida sino agua derramada sobre el campo, que se mete en cada hueco hasta no dejar espacio vacío. Esa es la imagen de la unión en el I Ching: no un pacto formal, sino una adherencia natural, algo que se junta porque le corresponde juntarse.

La figura tiene una sola línea entera, esta vez en el quinto lugar, el del gobernante. Cinco líneas partidas se orientan hacia ella. La unión del 8 tiene centro: la gente no se agrupa por afinidad difusa sino alrededor de algo o alguien que merece ese lugar. Por eso el Dictamen agrega una condición extraña y muy honesta: consultá una vez más. Antes de unirte, verificá que el centro tenga grandeza, constancia y perseverancia. Si no las tiene, la unión va a fallar por su base.

El final del Dictamen es el famoso aviso sobre el que llega tarde. Las alianzas tienen un momento de formación; cuando ya se cerraron, quien aparece después queda afuera aunque su intención sea buena. La Imagen lo traduce en política concreta: repartir el territorio y cultivar el trato amistoso, o sea construir el vínculo antes de necesitarlo.

The Judgment. Holding Together brings good fortune. Consult once more: if there is greatness, constancy and perseverance, there is no fault. Those who hesitate gradually draw near; whoever arrives too late meets misfortune.

The Image. Water above the earth: the image of Holding Together. Thus the ancient kings apportioned the territories and cultivated friendly relations with the princes.

Hexagram 8 is the exact mirror of 7: the same earth and the same water, but now the water is above. It is no longer a hidden water table but water poured over the field, seeping into every hollow until no empty space remains. That is the image of union in the I Ching: not a formal pact, but a natural adherence, something that gathers because gathering is what belongs.

The figure has a single unbroken line, this time in the fifth place, the ruler's. Five broken lines orient themselves toward it. The union of hexagram 8 has a centre: people do not group out of vague affinity but around something or someone that deserves that place. Hence the strange and very honest condition the Judgment adds: consult once more. Before joining, verify that the centre has greatness, constancy and perseverance. If it does not, the union will fail at its base.

The end of the Judgment is the famous warning about the latecomer. Alliances have a moment of formation; once they have closed, whoever shows up afterwards is left outside even with good intentions. The Image translates it into concrete politics: apportion the territory and cultivate friendly dealings, which is to say build the bond before you need it.

Sacaste el 8 y la pregunta tiene que ver con pertenecer: un equipo, una sociedad, un grupo de amigos, una pareja que se está formando, una comunidad, una familia política. La respuesta general es favorable. Unirse es lo que corresponde en este momento y hacerlo va a traer algo bueno.

Pero el hexagrama pone una condición que casi nadie cumple, y es la parte más valiosa del 8. Antes de entrar, mirá el centro. La pregunta no es si querés pertenecer: es si eso a lo que te querés unir tiene grandeza, constancia y perseverancia. El agua se adhiere a la tierra que encuentra. Si la tierra es firme, la unión sostiene; si está hecha de promesas, se filtra y desaparece.

En la vida concreta esto se traduce en preguntas simples y poco románticas. ¿Esta sociedad tiene alguien que cumple lo que dice? ¿Este grupo trata bien a los que no aportan nada esta semana? ¿Esta pareja sostiene los acuerdos chicos? ¿Esta empresa hizo con otros lo que ahora me promete a mí? El clásico te pide que consultes una vez más, y eso es exactamente lo que quiere decir: verificá antes de comprometerte.

El error típico del 8 es unirse por miedo a quedarse afuera. Firmar el contrato porque todos firman, entrar a un grupo para no estar solo, quedarse en un vínculo por no volver a empezar. Ese tipo de unión se rompe rápido y deja peor de lo que estabas. El error opuesto es el orgullo del que se queda mirando desde el borde, evaluando eternamente, hasta que la puerta se cierra: esa es la desgracia del que llega tarde.

El tercer camino del 8 es sencillo de enunciar y raro de ver: revisá primero, comprometete después, y hacelo a tiempo. Si el centro pasa la prueba, entrá entero, sin reservas ni cálculo. Si no la pasa, retirate ahora, cuando todavía no le debés nada a nadie.

En lo práctico, el hexagrama 8 suele aparecer cuando:

• Te están invitando a una sociedad, un equipo o un grupo y no sabés si entrar.
• Estás decidiendo si comprometerte de verdad con un vínculo que ya lleva un tiempo.
• Sentís que quedaste afuera de algo que se armó sin vos.
• Estás rodeado de gente y aun así no te sentís parte.

You drew 8 and the question has to do with belonging: a team, a partnership, a group of friends, a relationship taking shape, a community, an in-law family. The general answer is favourable. Joining is what belongs in this moment and doing it will bring something good.

But the hexagram sets a condition almost nobody meets, and it is the most valuable part of 8. Before you enter, look at the centre. The question is not whether you want to belong: it is whether the thing you want to join has greatness, constancy and perseverance. Water adheres to the earth it finds. If the earth is firm, the union holds; if it is made of promises, the water seeps through and disappears.

In real life this translates into simple, unromantic questions. Does this partnership have someone who does what they say? Does this group treat well the people who contribute nothing this week? Does this couple keep the small agreements? Has this company done for others what it is now promising me? The classic asks you to consult once more, and that is exactly what it means: verify before you commit.

The typical mistake with 8 is joining out of fear of being left out. Signing because everyone signs, entering a group so as not to be alone, staying in a bond to avoid starting over. That kind of union breaks fast and leaves you worse off than before. The opposite mistake is the pride of the one who watches from the edge, evaluating forever, until the door closes: that is the misfortune of the latecomer.

The third way of hexagram 8 is easy to state and rare to see: check first, commit afterwards, and do it in time. If the centre passes the test, go in whole, with no reservations and no calculation. If it does not, withdraw now, while you owe nobody anything.

In practice, hexagram 8 tends to come up when:

• You are being invited into a partnership, a team or a group and do not know whether to join.
• You are deciding whether to genuinely commit to a bond that has been going a while.
• You feel left out of something that formed without you.
• You are surrounded by people and still do not feel part of it.

   Empezás el vínculo diciendo la verdad, sin estrategia y sin vender una versión mejorada tuya. La vasija de barro es humilde y está llena: eso es lo que se ofrece. Lo notable de la línea es la promesa final, que la ventura llega desde afuera, o sea de gente que ni siquiera estaba en tus planes. La honestidad al inicio de una relación o de una sociedad atrae a la larga a quienes valen la pena. Mostrate como sos desde el primer día.

   You begin the bond by telling the truth, without strategy and without selling an improved version of yourself. The earthen bowl is humble and it is full: that is what is on offer. What is notable is the closing promise, that good fortune arrives from outside, meaning from people who were not even in your plans. Honesty at the start of a relationship or a partnership attracts, over time, the ones worth having. Show yourself as you are from day one.

   La unión que nace de una convicción propia y no de la presión del grupo. Es la línea del que se suma porque de verdad le importa, y por eso conserva su criterio adentro. El aviso implícito es no venderse barato: no te ofrezcas más de lo que te piden ni cambies de forma para que te acepten. Un vínculo que empieza con vos entregando dignidad no se corrige después. Entrá desde tu centro y quedate ahí.

   The union that is born from your own conviction and not from group pressure. It is the line of someone who joins because it genuinely matters to them, and who therefore keeps their judgement once inside. The implicit warning is not to sell yourself cheap: do not offer more than is asked and do not change shape to be accepted. A bond that starts with you handing over your dignity does not get corrected later. Come in from your centre and stay there.

   La frase más corta y más incómoda del hexagrama. Estás dentro de un grupo que no es el tuyo: los valores no coinciden, la conversación te vacía, hacés cosas que no harías solo. El texto no agrega catástrofe ni consejo, y esa sequedad es el consejo. Nadie te va a echar y nadie te va a avisar. En concreto: la sociedad que aceptaste por conveniencia, el grupo de siempre que ya no te representa, el trabajo donde encajás fingiendo. Mirá con quién estás.

   The shortest and most uncomfortable phrase in the hexagram. You are inside a group that is not yours: the values do not match, the conversation empties you, you do things you would not do alone. The text adds no catastrophe and no advice, and that dryness is the advice. Nobody will throw you out and nobody will warn you. Concretely: the partnership you accepted out of convenience, the old crowd that no longer represents you, the job where you fit by pretending. Look at who you are with.

   Ya elegiste y ahora corresponde que se note. Es la línea de hacer pública la alianza: presentar a la persona, firmar el contrato, poner tu nombre al lado del proyecto, defenderlo en voz alta cuando no está presente. Muchos vínculos se debilitan justo acá, en la diferencia entre estar adentro y admitir que estás adentro. Si ya tomaste la decisión, sostenela también hacia afuera. La lealtad que se esconde no llega a ser lealtad.

   You have already chosen and now it should show. This is the line of making the alliance public: introducing the person, signing the contract, putting your name beside the project, defending it out loud when it is not in the room. Many bonds weaken precisely here, in the gap between being in and admitting you are in. If you already decided, hold it outwardly too. Loyalty that hides never quite becomes loyalty.

In the hunt the king surrounds only three sides and lets those fleeing ahead go. His people need no warning. Good fortune.

   La mejor línea del hexagrama y una lección de liderazgo entera: se deja un lado abierto. El que quiere irse, se va sin castigo; el que se queda, se queda por decisión propia. Eso es lo que hace que la unión valga. En concreto: no retengas gente con culpa, con contratos leoninos ni con chantaje afectivo. Dejá la puerta abierta y decilo en voz alta. Lo que queda después de ofrecer la salida es lo único que se puede llamar lealtad.

   The best line of the hexagram and a whole lesson in leadership: one side is left open. Whoever wants to leave leaves without punishment; whoever stays, stays by their own decision. That is what makes the union worth anything. Concretely: do not hold people with guilt, with punishing contracts or with emotional blackmail. Leave the door open and say so out loud. What remains after you have offered the exit is the only thing that can be called loyalty.
