El dictamen. La mordedura tajante tiene éxito. Es propicio aplicar la justicia.

La imagen. El trueno y el relámpago: la imagen de la mordedura tajante. Así los antiguos reyes afirmaban las leyes con penas claramente definidas.

La figura del 21 se lee como un dibujo: la línea firme de abajo y la de arriba son las mandíbulas, las líneas blandas del medio son la boca abierta, y esa cuarta línea dura atravesada en el centro es lo que no deja cerrar. Hay un obstáculo dentro de la boca. No se puede hablar, no se puede comer, no se puede seguir. Hay que morder.

Los trigramas son el trueno abajo y el fuego arriba: el estruendo y el relámpago de la misma tormenta. Uno hace ruido, el otro ilumina. La tradición los junta para describir cómo debe aplicarse una sanción: con energía, pero con luz. La fuerza sin claridad es violencia; la claridad sin fuerza no corrige nada.

Por eso la Imagen habla de penas claramente definidas. Lo que hace justa a una regla no es su dureza sino que se conozca de antemano y se aplique igual para todos. El 21 es el único hexagrama del libro dedicado por completo al momento en que un obstáculo tiene que ser removido, y su consejo es que el corte se haga por procedimiento y no por enojo acumulado.

The Image. Thunder and lightning: the image of Biting Through. Thus the ancient kings made the laws firm with clearly defined penalties.

The figure of 21 reads as a drawing: the firm line at the bottom and the one at the top are the jaws, the yielding lines in the middle are the open mouth, and that hard fourth line lodged in the centre is what keeps it from closing. There is an obstacle inside the mouth. You cannot speak, you cannot eat, you cannot go on. You have to bite.

The trigrams are thunder below and fire above: the crash and the flash of the same storm. One makes noise, the other gives light. Tradition joins them to describe how a sanction should be applied: with energy, but with light. Force without clarity is violence; clarity without force corrects nothing.

That is why the Image speaks of clearly defined penalties. What makes a rule just is not its harshness but that it is known in advance and applied equally to everyone. 21 is the only hexagram in the book devoted entirely to the moment when an obstacle has to be removed, and its advice is that the cut be made by procedure and not by accumulated anger.

El oráculo dice que hay que morder: intervenir, cortar, aplicar la regla. Es de los pocos hexagramas que autorizan la firmeza sin rodeos. Pero fijate en la letra chica del Dictamen: es propicio aplicar la justicia, no descargar la bronca. Esa diferencia es todo el hexagrama.

El error típico tiene dos formas. La primera es tragar: convivís con el obstáculo, lo relativizás, buscás rodearlo, y cada mes que pasa te cuesta un poco más. La segunda es explotar: te aguantaste tanto que cuando finalmente actuás lo hacés con una fuerza desproporcionada, y la línea 6 describe adónde lleva eso, al que ya no escucha nada, encerrado en su propio castigo.

El tercer camino es el del relámpago y el trueno juntos: nombrar el obstáculo con precisión, decir cuál es la regla y aplicarla sin escena. Primero la luz, después el ruido. En lo cotidiano se ve así: mandás el aviso por escrito antes de cortar el servicio, decís exactamente qué conducta no va a seguir en esta casa, ponés la fecha límite y la cumplís. Nadie tiene que quedar humillado para que el problema se resuelva. Las líneas del medio miden la dureza de lo que estás mordiendo: hay carne blanda y hay hueso viejo. Si te toca el hueso, contá con paciencia y no aflojes a mitad de camino.

En lo práctico, el hexagrama 21 suele aparecer cuando:

• Cuando venís tragando algo hace meses y estás a punto de explotar.

You drew 21 and something is jammed. It is not a doubt or a bad mood: it is a concrete obstacle with a name. A person who blocks, a debt that never settles, a pending conversation months old, a clause nobody signs. While it sits there, everything else is paralysed, exactly like a mouth that cannot close.

The oracle says you have to bite: intervene, cut, apply the rule. It is one of the few hexagrams that authorise firmness without hedging. But read the small print of the Judgment: it is favourable to administer justice, not to unload your anger. That difference is the whole hexagram.

The typical mistake takes two shapes. The first is swallowing: you live with the obstacle, you play it down, you look for ways around it, and every month it costs you a little more. The second is exploding: you held it in so long that when you finally act you act with disproportionate force, and line 6 describes where that leads, to the person who no longer hears anything, shut inside his own punishment.

The third way is lightning and thunder together: name the obstacle precisely, state the rule and apply it without a scene. Light first, noise afterwards. In daily life it looks like this: you send the written notice before cutting off the service, you say exactly which behaviour will not continue in this house, you set the deadline and you keep it. Nobody has to be humiliated for the problem to be solved. The middle lines measure how hard what you are biting is: there is tender meat and there is old bone. If you get bone, plan for patience and do not slacken halfway.

In practice, hexagram 21 tends to come up when:

• When a limit has to be set, a debt collected, or an agreement nobody honours brought to an end.
• When you have been swallowing something for months and are about to explode.
• When you have to sanction someone and want to do it properly.

   First offence, small penalty. The line approves early correction precisely because it is light: the foot is stopped before the person walks toward something worse. In daily life it is the word had on day one, the invoice chased in the first week, the limit you set the first time rather than the tenth. It hurts little and prevents a lot. If you are here, do not let this one go out of goodwill: the next one will not be small.

   The obstacle was easy and you still overdid the force. You bit so hard you sank in up to the nose. The line does not condemn you: it says there is no fault, because the cause was just. But it marks the style. It is the three-paragraph message to ask for something simple, the emergency meeting about a five-minute matter. When the resistance is slight, turn the power down and save the force for what comes later.

La línea avisa que vas a pasar un mal momento y que igual no cometiste ningún error. El problema no es tu intervención, es la antigüedad del asunto. Si estás acá, no te retires por el mal sabor. Terminá lo que empezaste, pero contá con que va a llevar más tiempo del previsto.

   You went to correct an old matter and something ugly came out that you did not expect: a stored resentment, a fact you did not want to know, a disproportionate reaction.    La línea del que aplica la sanción desde el centro, con equilibrio. El oro amarillo es el color del medio: ni blando ni cruel. Acá no estás peleando, estás resolviendo, y por eso la resistencia baja sola. Es el estilo del que dice lo que hay que decir con la voz tranquila, sin agrandar el asunto ni pedir disculpas por él. La única advertencia es no confiarte: seguí atento al peligro mientras lo resolvés, porque tu calma no garantiza la del otro.

   The line of the one who applies the sanction from the centre, in balance. Yellow gold is the colour of the middle: neither soft nor cruel. Here you are not fighting, you are resolving, and that is why the resistance drops on its own. It is the style of the person who says what must be said in a calm voice, without inflating the matter or apologising for it. The one warning is not to get comfortable: stay alert to the danger while you resolve it, because your calm does not guarantee the other side.
