La imagen. El cielo y la tierra se unen: la imagen de la paz. Así el soberano ordena y completa el curso del cielo y de la tierra, regula sus dones y con eso sostiene al pueblo.

La figura parece invertida y es exactamente al revés. El Cielo, que es liviano y sube, está abajo; la Tierra, que es pesada y baja, está arriba. Como cada uno se mueve hacia el otro, se encuentran en el medio. Ese cruce es todo el hexagrama: la paz no es quietud, es circulación.

El calendario chino pone al 11 en el primer mes, el arranque de la primavera, cuando tres líneas de yang ya crecieron desde abajo y el frío empieza a soltar. Es el momento del año en que la tierra se ablanda y el trabajo rinde. Por eso el dictamen dice que lo pequeño se va y lo grande llega: lo mezquino se retira y lo generoso avanza.

La Imagen no manda disfrutar, manda gobernar. El soberano ordena, completa y regula. Es una instrucción muy poco romántica y muy sabia: las buenas épocas son cortas y su función es que construyas la estructura que va a sostenerte cuando cambien. El clásico ya lo anuncia en la línea 3, con una frase que vale por todo el hexagrama: no hay llanura sin pendiente ni ida sin regreso.

The Judgment. Peace. The small departs and the great arrives. Good fortune. Success.

The Image. Heaven and earth unite: the image of Peace. Thus the ruler orders and completes the course of heaven and earth, regulates their gifts and thereby sustains the people.

The figure looks upside down and it is exactly the reverse. Heaven, which is light and rises, is below; Earth, which is heavy and sinks, is above. Since each moves toward the other, they meet in the middle. That crossing is the entire hexagram: peace is not stillness, it is circulation.

The Chinese calendar puts 11 in the first month, the start of spring, when three yang lines have already grown from below and the cold begins to let go. It is the time of year when the ground softens and work pays off. That is why the Judgment says the small departs and the great arrives: what is mean withdraws and what is generous comes forward.

The Image does not command enjoyment, it commands governing. The ruler orders, completes and regulates. It is a very unromantic and very wise instruction: good seasons are short and their job is to let you build the structure that will hold you when they turn. The classic announces it already in line 3, with a sentence that could stand for the whole hexagram: there is no plain without a slope and no going without a return.

Pero el consejo del oráculo no es disfrutar, es otra cosa: usá la buena época para construir lo que va a sostenerte cuando cambie. El 11 no premia al que se relaja; premia al que aprovecha. Cielo y tierra se están tocando y eso significa que ahora los esfuerzos conectan: lo que sembrás prende, a quien llamás te atiende, lo que pedís te lo dan.

En lo concreto: es el momento de firmar el contrato largo, de hacer el chequeo médico, de ahorrar, de tener la conversación pendiente con tu pareja mientras están bien, de documentar el proceso que hoy funciona porque vos lo sostenés a pulmón, de contratar antes de necesitar. Es el momento de invitar a la gente que sumó, no solo a la que sirve. Y de decir en voz alta lo que estás agradeciendo, porque en las buenas épocas se olvida rápido quién te sostuvo antes.

El error típico con el 11 también viene en dos versiones. Una es la euforia: creer que la marea alta es mérito propio y comprometerte con gastos, promesas y ritmos que solo se sostienen con viento a favor. La otra es la desconfianza: estar bien y no poder habitarlo, esperando la trampa, buscando el problema, arruinando el buen momento por miedo a que se termine. El tercer camino que propone el hexagrama es raro y muy adulto: gozar y ordenar al mismo tiempo. Ampliar donde hay lugar y reforzar donde va a faltar. Nadie construye un techo bajo la tormenta.

En lo práctico, el hexagrama 11 suele aparecer cuando:

• Todo está saliendo bien y no sabés si aprovecharlo o esperar la mala.
• Un vínculo pasa por su mejor momento y hay algo que conviene hablar ahora.
• El trabajo rinde y aparece la tentación de comprometerte con más de lo que vas a poder sostener.
• Alguien de arriba y alguien de abajo por fin se están entendiendo.

You drew 11 and the answer is yes. It is one of the most open hexagrams in the book: things are flowing, people answer you, work pays off, the body cooperates, the relationship is in a good stretch. There is no fine print in that. Enjoy it.

But the advice of the oracle is not to enjoy, it is something else: use the good season to build what will hold you when it turns. 11 does not reward whoever relaxes; it rewards whoever takes advantage. Heaven and earth are touching, and that means efforts connect right now: what you sow takes root, whoever you call picks up, what you ask for gets granted.

Concretely: this is the moment to sign the long contract, to get the medical check-up, to save, to have the pending conversation with your partner while things are good, to document the process that works today only because you carry it, to hire before you need to. It is the moment to invite the people who added something, not only the useful ones.

The typical mistake with 11 also comes in two versions. One is euphoria: believing the high tide is your own doing and committing to costs, promises and rhythms that only hold with the wind behind you. The other is distrust: being well and not being able to inhabit it, waiting for the trap, hunting for the problem, spoiling the good stretch out of fear that it will end. The third way this hexagram proposes is rare and very grown-up: enjoy and organise at the same time. Expand where there is room and reinforce where there will be a shortfall. Nobody builds a roof during the storm.

In practice, hexagram 11 tends to come up when:

• Everything is going well and you do not know whether to make the most of it or brace for the bad.
• A relationship is at its best and there is something worth saying now.
• Work is paying off and the temptation appears to commit to more than you can sustain.
• Someone above and someone below are finally understanding each other.

La línea recomienda moverse en grupo, no en solitario, porque en la primavera lo que crece está enlazado bajo tierra. En lo concreto: llevá a tu equipo, recomendá a quien sabe, armá la mesa con los que te sostuvieron cuando no había nada. Es el momento de emprender, y de emprender acompañado.

   When the good stretch begins it never arrives alone: it pulls your people with it. You land something and immediately think of three people who could come in with you. The line advises moving as a group, not alone, because in spring what grows is linked underground. Concretely: bring your team, recommend whoever is good, build the table with the ones who held you up when there was nothing. It is the time to undertake, and to undertake with company.

Cuatro instrucciones: bancarte a los que no son finos, animarte a lo que da miedo, acordarte de los que no están en la mesa y no repartir por amistad. En lo concreto: incluí al que trabaja bien aunque te caiga pesado, dale la oportunidad al que está lejos, no armes el equipo solo con amigos. La paz se sostiene por amplitud, no por afinidad.

   The most demanding line of the hexagram and the best description of good leadership in the book. Four instructions: put up with people who are not refined, dare to do the frightening thing, remember those who are not at the table, and do not hand things out on friendship. Concretely: include whoever works well even if you find them heavy, give the chance to the one who is far away, do not build the team out of friends only. Peace holds through breadth, not through affinity.

3. LíneaLine 3 — No hay llano sin cuestaNo plain without a slope

   No hay llanura sin pendiente ni ida sin regreso. Perseverar en la dificultad no trae culpa.There is no plain without a slope and no going without a return. Persevering through the difficulty brings no fault.

   El recordatorio en el medio de la fiesta: esto también va a cambiar. No es una amenaza, es física. La línea no te pide que dejes de disfrutar sino que no te olvides de que el terreno sube y baja. En lo concreto: guardá una parte, no te comprometas con gastos fijos que solo aguantan si todo sigue igual, mantené la relación con la gente que vas a necesitar después. Y cuando llegue la cuesta, no te quejes de la ley del mundo: seguí.

   The reminder in the middle of the party: this too will pass. It is not a threat, it is physics. The line does not ask you to stop enjoying but not to forget that ground rises and falls. Concretely: put some aside, do not take on fixed costs that only hold if everything stays the same, keep up the relationships you will need later. And when the slope comes, do not complain about the law of the world: keep going.

4. LíneaLine 4 — Bajar sin alardearComing down without boasting

   Desciende revoloteando, sin jactarse de su riqueza, junto a su vecino, sin recelo y con sinceridad.He flutters down, not boasting of his wealth, alongside his neighbour, without suspicion and in sincerity.

   Alguien que está arriba baja a encontrarse con los de abajo, y lo hace liviano, sin hacer pesar el favor. Esta es la línea del jefe que se sienta a laburar con el equipo, del que tiene y no lo restriega, del que pide ayuda aunque no le corresponda pedirla. Funciona porque no hay cálculo: es sinceridad, no estrategia. Si estás en esta línea, bajá el escalón vos, antes de que te lo pidan. Nadie sube por vos si no bajás primero.

   Someone who is up top comes down to meet those below, and does it lightly, without making the favour weigh. This is the line of the boss who sits down to work with the team, of the person who has and does not rub it in, of the one who asks for help even when it is not their place to ask. It works because there is no calculation: it is sincerity, not strategy. If you are on this line, step down yourself, before anyone asks. Nobody climbs toward you unless you come down first.

   El soberano casa a su hija: eso trae bendición y fortuna suprema.The sovereign marries off his daughter: this brings blessing and supreme good fortune.

   La imagen es la de una alianza donde el que tiene más rango se pone a la par para que la unión funcione. La línea premia la humildad del que podría imponer y elige acompañar. En lo concreto: la sociedad que se firma en condiciones justas, el acuerdo donde el fuerte cede algo para que el otro pueda cumplir, la reconciliación en la que no exigís que el otro venga arrastrándose. Es la mejor línea del hexagrama porque une sin humillar.

   The image is an alliance where the one with higher rank steps down to the same level so the union can work. The line rewards the humility of someone who could impose and chooses to accompany instead. Concretely: the partnership signed on fair terms, the agreement where the strong side gives something up so the other can deliver, the reconciliation where you do not demand that the other person come crawling. It is the best line of the hexagram because it joins without humiliating.

   La muralla vuelve a caer en el foso. No uses el ejército. Da tus órdenes en tu propia ciudad. Perseverar ahora humilla.The wall falls back into the moat. Do not use the army. Give your orders within your own town. Persevering now brings humiliation.

   La época buena se terminó y la línea es clarísima sobre qué no hacer: no salgas a pelear para retenerla. La muralla que construiste se está desarmando sola y forzar una campaña ahora es tirar lo que queda. En lo concreto: no metas más plata en el negocio que se apaga, no persigas a quien ya se fue, no anuncies una remontada que no tenés cómo bancar. Ocupate de lo tuyo, en tu escala, con los que quedaron. Retirarse a tiempo también es gobernar.

   The good season is over and the line is very clear about what not to do: do not go out and fight to hold on to it. The wall you built is coming apart on its own and forcing a campaign now throws away what is left. Concretely: do not put more money into the business that is dimming, do not chase whoever already left, do not announce a comeback you cannot fund. Take care of your own, at your scale, with the people who stayed. Withdrawing in time is also governing.
